13 Weird and Wonderful World Records in Dubai

From the tallest building in the world, to the highest restaurant from ground level to the largest fountains in the world… There’s many “world’s greatest” that we’re familiar with as residents and visitors to Dubai.

While the biggies are great to observe with great admiration, there are some things Dubai also holds a record for that aren’t exactly what you’d expect.

After all, if it isn’t one of the most amazing things you’ve seen… Are you even in Dubai?

Tallest chocolate sculpture

In November 2014, a gentleman called Andrew Farrugia created the tallest chocolate sculpture in the world, at a whopping 13.52 meters tall. The awe-inspiring sculpture was unveiled at Dubai International Airport on the 27th November, after being shipped from Farrugia’s chocolate laboratory in Malta to Dubai and assembled in Terminal 3. It was originally meant to be 17 meters tall, but unfortunately due to time constraints it was shortened. Still, the record was made! We bet it tasted amazing, too.

On 14th April 2016, Dubai Properties secured a record for the largest origami mosaic in the world. Measuring a staggering 1,090.98m2, the mosaic measured 110.2m in length, and 9.9m in width and was created at Jumeirah Beach Residence.

Largest gathering of people dressed as nurses

Want to be a nurse for the day, without all of the medical training and years of education to get you there? That’s what 691 people aimed for as part of the Dubai Healthy Authority’s attempt to organise the largest gathering of people dresses as nurses in the world on January 24th, 2014.

Most nails filed and varnished in 8 hours (team)

Some of you may be familiar with the beauty salon, Beauty Connection Spa. Few of you may know that their team actually achieved a world record for the most nails filed and varnished in 8 hours by their staff. In total, 5,193 people walked out of their Dubai Mall salon with perfectly-manicured tips and toes on February 14th, 2014.

Most TV channels broadcasting the same programme simultaneously

The world record for most TV channels broadcasting the same programme at the same time is held by a gentleman called Mustafa Salamah. His TV programme A Distinguished Woman was broadcasted simultaneously across 61 TV channels on April 7th, 2010.

Most to parachute from a balloon simultaneously

It’s no surprise that the well-known Skydive Dubai hold the world record for most people to parachute from a balloon simultaneously. 25 people parachuted from a balloon on February 10th, 2013. Who thinks of these ideas?


Most nationalities singing a national anthem at the same time dubai

Most nationalities singing a national/regional anthem simultaneously

On 1st December 2014, GEMS Education organised an event where the most nationalities sung a national anthem simultaneously. They achieved the world record with 119 countries being represented at the same time, and the event was part of the UAE’s 42rd National Day celebrations.

Most clothes pegs held in the hand

We can’t quite explain how or why a gentleman called Ahmmad Bin Darwesh was able to hold 40 clothes pegs in on single hand on 29th January, 2009. But he achieved a world record for it, so mabrook to him! Perhaps we need more information… How big were the clothes pegs, were they plastic or wooden..?

Most shoelaces tied in a bow in one minute

We can only just about manage to tie a bow in 10 minutes, nevermind 31 in 1 minute! Khaled Abdul Aziz Alhosani clearly showcased insane skills in managing to tie that many bows, securing himself a world record for the most shoelaces tied in a bow in one minute on 21st February, 2009.

Largest flag suspended

The largest flag suspended in the world measures at 2,461.57m2 and the record is held by Dubai’s Meydan Group LLC. The record was given on 26th March, 2016. The flat was the UAE’s national flag, and all proceedings were observed by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai.

Largest serving of Aseeda

For those of you who have never heard of Aseeda, it’s an arab-style, extra-large, high energy dumpling, which can be eaten sweet or savour and can be made with a variety of flavours. On 16th November 2013, Za’abeel Palace Hospitality secured themselves a world record for the largest serving of Aseeda, weighing at 2,845.5kg.


Largest vertical maze on Al Rostamani Maze Tower

Largest vertical maze – permanent

A lot of you may recognise this eye-catching skyscraper on Sheikh Zayed Road. Completed on January 1st, 2012, the Al Rostamani Maze Tower won a world record for the largest vertical maze that is permanent on its front façade.

Fastest text message in Arabic blindfolded

We wonder just how much you can text – and accurately text that is, without spelling mistakes – while blindfolder in English. Well, Mohamed Ahmed Al Mulla won the world record for the fastest text message in Arabic… While blindfolded on 30th January, 2009. In just 2 minutes and 13 seconds, he successfully texted the following message in Arabic, with no mistakes… “The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality, they seldom attack a human.”
