Here's How Artists and Designers Can Leave A Mark on Expo 2020

Submissions will close on Tuesday, September 10

Designers, architects, artists - professional or amateur, and other creatives are invited for an opportunity to leave their mark at the upcoming Expo 2020.

Art Jameel and Expo 2020 collaborated to launch the Sabeel 2020 competition, where talents can produce unique and innovative drinking fountains for the expo site. Open to UAE nationals, residents, and international designers based abroad, the drinking fountain ideas must be drawn from the Expo 2020 theme of "Connecting Minds, Creating the Future", including subthemes of opportunity, sustainability, and mobility.

The judging committee will consist of seven renowned architects and designers who will select three winning designs. Each winner will be awarded a prize money of AED 100,000.

The winning designs will also be funded and produced by Expo 2020. 45 drinking fountains based on these designs will be installed across the site and become permanent fixtures for visitors to use.

What are the competition guidelines

Art Jameel, a Dubai-based organisation promoting artists and creative communities in the Middle East, will be managing the competition.

The seven jurors come from around the world and include Nasser Abdulhasan, an architect and co-founder of AGi architects; Christopher Turner, the Keeper of Design, Architecture and Digital at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; Hani Asfour, professional architect and Dean of Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation; Manal Ataya, Director General of the Sharjah Museums Authority; and Shumon Basar, a writer, curator and Commissioner of Art Dubai’s Global Art Forum.

The drinking fountain proposals will be evaluated based on their aesthetic and overall usability. According to the Sabeel 2020, the competition guidelines state that the visual elements must be "iconic in nature" and functional, while keeping in mind public health and safety standards.

Other elements the designers must incorporate include technical requirements, such as the design's ability to handle the high amount of usage, as the Expo 2020 event is expected to welcome 150,000 every day.

The competition requires the designer to draw knowledge from various fields including sculpture, product design, and architecture. Those interested must submit their drinking fountain concept drawings, technical drawings, a draft of the expected budget, and a statement that explains their proposed work.

Winners will be announced in November. Full list of requirements from applicants can be found on the Sabeel 2020 official website.
