Looking for a pre-owned 4 x 4

I am looking to purchase a pre-owned 4x4 and, as a single mom with absolutely no experience buying a used car, I am paralyzed with fear! I would really like to stay in the QR60,000 and under range because I think I will probably turn this car over to my daughter next year and buy new. I went to some of the car dealerships (Toyota and Honda) thinking that their cars would probably be more reliable, but discovered that their pre-owned cars are almost as expensive as new ones. Then, I went to Oasis to have a look and there are possibilities there but I still have the open questions about whether the car is reliable and the price is fair.

My preference is to purchase a car from an expat who is leaving. I have heard that there are forums for buying and selling within some of the large oil and gas companies. Is there anyone out there who could post a "looking to buy" add for me?

VRDoha - I just wanted to add that when we sold our SUV for 98500 a few months ago - it was really annoying that people would call up and offer us like 30000 LESS than what we advertised it for. I get that people like to bargain but that's just ridiculous!. We only had one 'Expat' call us and he asked for a couple thousand off (as you do) and because he was so nice about it, I agreed that he could just pay us what we owed the bank (so about 5000 less than advertised by then). It was such a smooth deal and I was very grateful. I think it only for sale less than 3 weeks. My point is - when buying a used car - I think its hard to know in this region if it is priced to haggle serious amounts off or just a few thousand as you would expect to do back home...also, everyone that called asked me what was my "Last Price"? I think one strategy you could use is that if you see something advertised from people leaving Doha - just give people the price you're willing to pay and tell them to call you if they don't sell it for more before they leave Doha! That was a big concern for me - having to pay off the loan - so I just kept taking peoples phone numbers - no matter how ridiculously low the offer was - just in case!

We bought a 2006 Kia Sportage for around QR37000 but we sold it on as we wanted something bigger with rear a/c. I've now got a Nissan Pathfinder, approx 5 yrs old which we paid QR50k for. Both were bought off expats. My husband has a 2008 Landrover Freelander (LR2) which was something like QR80k from a dealer with 3-year warranty. My Nissan is better than his LR though! It copes better with the heat and the desert, but then I drive off-road a lot more than he does - pretty much every day in fact (dog walking!). His LR is just OK in the desert, although it is much nicer to drive for commuting to work.

Just wondered what the average price would be for a pre-owned small/average size 4 x 4 here nowadays (selling between expat community - as you would hope you wouldn't be swindled!!!!) :\:

PPS the ones on Qatarliving which regularly appear for WAY less than the typical market value should be ignored - there are always a few ads of this nature regularly posted with similar phone numbers and I presume there is some sort of scam going on.

PS we just bought a 4 yr old Nissan Pathfinder for 50k if that's any help with thinking what you could get in your budget. It was admittedly a very good deal though (friend of a friend).

I did. There are loads more cars on Qatarliving than there are on Dubizzle as it's not been operating in Qatar for very long. Look for ads which are written in good English - personally I think it's easier to buy off a Westerner so you can get a more accurate picture of the car's history (no language issues) and since Doha is such a small town I would think you less likely to get ripped off this way, as paths may well cross in the future! If you see any that look promising I am more than happy to volunteer my husband! I'm sure a few ales from QDC would help to oil his wheels ;)

I know you'd probably rather go with a friend of a friend, but if you have no joy Dubizzle is a great resource. I used it a lot in Dubai, and realised it has started up here! You can even put an alert on what you're looking for. You never know you might meet a nice expat (seller) who is really helpful and will let you know honestly about their car!! http://qatar.dubizzle.com/classified/autos4x4s/
