UK tax question.... when is it "safe" to return?

DH and I are thinking about moving back to the UK in the summer (i.e. after 5 April 2011)- having been here since June 2008. We have a question regarding income tax liability in the UK.....
If we move back before 183 days into the 2011/12 tax year, will we be liable to pay income tax on our earnings from here from 5 April 2011 until we move back? Is the clever way to move back 184 days into the new tax year and claim split year treatment?
