As I have mentioned hubby has changed job in the last few months and we have just found out I am pregnant but that our policy doesn't cover it. Has anyone else been through this and can advise what our options are? Private packages, government hospitals etc. Thanks any help would be greatly appreciated :-)

Thanks for the advice ladies. From what I have gathered I can't now purchase insurance so I will have to either pay as I go or get a package somewhere. It's my second baby so think I will be happy with following the uk check up schedules rather than the uae one I had with my first which is a totally luxury when insurance covers it but not necessary when you are paying yourself ;-) I guess I will have to just go round all the hospitals and see what each package covers and the cost. I know the the cheapest isn't always the best option and the quality of care has to be considered but will need to find a happy medium as babies aren't cheap ;-)

Ours did not cover maternity either HOWEVER it covered it in the case of emergency. So I purchased a package for my visits and we saved for the actual birth. Well, it ended with me needing an emergency C-sec and by the time I made it back to my room after the surgery I was informed they already sent request for approvals (my doc was on the ball) and that the entire thing was covered! I saved 25,000AED.

Many years ago a friend of mine was in the same situation. She went to an Iraqi dr (dont know the name) in Dar Al Shifa clinic (the one opposite to the old coop in tourist club). She said she payed a package for 8 months which included monthly follow up and ultrasound, she was quite happy. I am not sure about blood tests though. When she was 9 months pregnant she started going to corniche an gave birth there. I remember in my last child i went to corniche to open a file just in case things go wrong. They didnt take my insurance and i remember paying over 1500 for an ultrasound and some blood tests in one visit. i know that now the corniche charges a lot more than they did, but as a government hospital still think it would be cheaper than a private hospital and really its not down to the money it should be down to the care and expertise as well. there is no point paying loads of money for nice plush surroundings if the medical services arent as good.
