I just wanted to mention since we are on the subject...since we are only allowed 1 bag in economy with QA LON-DOH, you can pay a little extra and fly prem economy on BA - just a touch down in Bahrain - but you get better seats and 2 bags :)

Thanks for the replies. In NY she barely looked at the weight, gosh all that worry for nothing! We missed our connection in Doha on the way home and spent 5 hours u til 1 am in the airport, yuk. I think with the extensive advertising QA does I maybe expected a little more dazzle in their service but I found them ok. Thanks again.

I have been flying with QA for the 8 years we have lived here. I have to say that I really like them as an airline. The one main reason I stay with them is that they are always forgiving with the luggage allowance (in my experience). I am not a `light' traveller with three kids in tow. However, recently the quality of the food has definitely gone downhill and I never seem to get my requested special meals for the kids. So something there is amiss - they did note down my complaint on the last flight so we shall see if things improve next time! We all have preferences when flying. There is plenty of choice out there so I know I can always book with another airline if I wanted to do. So far I haven't. (PS I'm with you on the `pies/pasties' they serve up on QA - they are truly disgusting!)

Marycatherine, I have to admit I have actually never tasted the meat pies. I don't like to eat foods that are mixed together. Which makes pretty much ALL airline food disgusting to me. I prefer to fly British Airways where I request a fruit platter each time -- and it's been great. Finally something that I am willing to eat on an airplane. We also flew another airline once that I thought the food was okay on... can't remember if it was Etihad or Emirates though. I just remember that it was a short flight (an hour) and they actually served a complete meal during that time. P.S. I am in no way discounting your experiences with the airline. I know that I have before put in a special meal request with them and I never receive it. Which I just kind of shrug off because I know from experience just to pack my own food when we fly. :) edited by DebK on 16/03/2012

My experience (including being charged for a marginally overweight bag - 2 kg) has been poor every time from check in counter to flight service. Perhaps I've just been flying with them on their only bad days. I'm glad your experiences have been better. I disagree with others' opinions based on [b'>my [/b'>experience and I don't care what awards QA have received as the experience outweighs the advertising [i'>for myself[/i'>. Like many customers, I vote with my feet and take my money elsewhere, based on that experience. I agree the bus is a side issue - As for providing positive (as well as negative) feedback, I do so with my airline of choice and other businesses I patronize - And guess what? They respond to me with a real message (not one of those robo messages, thanks for your input, etc.) Do I always get what I want? No not on your life, but I get treated as a valuable customer - professionally and with respect. BTW DebK I did make a complaint about a particularly vile breakfast to a competing airline - and received a thoughtful reply that they were looking into it and hoped to make some positive changes - and they followed up with me later. Maybe you should bring the meat pie quality to QAs attention?

I know that Qatar Airways generally seems to be pretty forgiving of slight increases in baggage weight, but don't specifically know about how they are at JFK. ... as for other comments that have been made about Qatar Airways, I have never had issue with the crew on the plane. In my experiences they have always been extremely professional. The only thing I do not like about Qatar Airways is the food. (Those meat pies -- even the thought disgusts me!) Of course, I generally feel this way about the food on most airlines. There are a lot of airports that use a bus to transport people from the tarmac to the terminal. If they simply waited to be able to allow every plane to leave from a terminal then they would be offering fewer flights each day. With any business there will be customers who are not satisfied with the service they received or the response from the company in regards to it. Even the best companies will sometimes have a bad day -- but I do wish that people would be just as vocal about things when they receive good service. Why are we always so quick to tell every one about the negative but never the positive?

Qatar Airways do not milatently monitor every exact kg for baggage, they use common sense and only charge if you a lot over the limit. And regarding the other negative comments which were not even asked for, I will defend Qatar airways. I have flown them a lot, and being one of only several airlines in the world with the 5 Star rating, says it all. Obviously there is going to be a problem here and there but that goes with absolutely any service to the public in any industry, correct me if I am wrong? The airport is moving to the new Doha airport in under a year, which is larger then Heathrow and unfortunately the airline cannot close until then, so buses are a short term solution until then. The bus is under 5mins btw. Finally, which I think is extremely odd to mention the performance of the flight crew, as in th last post. The fligh crew in all airlines are under strict licensing and rigorous training requirements which are controlled by just a few agencies worldwide and not by the airline, and I can assure you from personal experience that QR like most top airlines are well above what you would deem "satisfactory" if you only knew...! So bashing the flight crew abilities and professionalism is outside the scope of this forum. Not to mention how anyone could come to such a conclusion from sitting in a passenger seat "judging" the flight crew from there.

Unfortunately my experience has been very negative, to the point where I won't fly Qatar Airways even if it's cheaper or more convenient. They have poor ground staff and their flight crew are only marginally better - anywhere in the world. They don't respond to written complaints and generally have a p!ss poor customer service ethic. But then, I gave up on them after my 3rd trip (and 7th written complaint none of which were addressed) And you still have to ride a bus out to and in from the aircraft. :( edited by marycatherine on 15/03/2012

Flying out of JFK I have found that they are usually pretty forgiving of a couple of kg. Of course it helps if the flight isn't too full, or if your son has the same name as the check-in agent and you can get into a nice conversation about how you chose the name (I swear that happened to me once, and tadaaa! no charge for about 15kg overload!).

Hi there, I am flying out of JFK tonight for Doha and I am a little over on my luggage allowance, are they strict here? Have you had any experience from JFK ? I think I have about 3 or 4 kg over. Thanks
