Hello ladies

I am due to make a family move to qatar in the next few months. Despite advice from users of this site (thank you), I have had a singular lack of success in finding clinical psychology jobs in Qatar. So I am on to Plan B, which is to set up in private practice as I do now in the UK.

I have a doctorate in clinical psychology and I work with children and adults. For children I offer educational assessments (e.g. IQ, language ability, dyslexia etc) direct therapeutic intervention with the child and indirect work with the family (e.g. issues such as behavioural problems e.g. eating, sleeping, phobias etc).

With adults, I offer a broad range of assessments, plus therapy for issues such as anxiety, depression etc. I also conduct couple work.

I am keen to know whether there might be need for such services, particularly within the expat community. Any advice/response would be welcome as this may determine whether I remain in the UK with the children, or move out to Qatar with my husband.

Thank you all in advance!

Hi there, Welcome to Qatar. Your services are highly needed here. While my research on counselors in qatar, i couldn't find even a single female counselor. I am bachelors in Psychology and currently doing a course in Counselling. I hope, I could work here and spread awareness on psychological issues. I would suggest you to stay here and do a private practice. UK already have many psychologists. Due to cultural backwardness, people here, were not very aware of this field but with time, they are getting aware of the need of it. Please stay here and provide awareness to the people. Give open workshops on psychological issues so that more and more people benefit from it. My mom is bipolar.. And i personally need your services. Kindly let me know how can i contact you. edited by Ishah on 07/08/2014

Hi Minegirl are you here yet? We need you. ;-). I would love to have some expat psychologist at hand for my girl. I would love to have your personal contact details when you are in Doha. Your husband’s salary is a good salary especially if the work pays part of the school fees which is rather expensive if you have to pay it by yourself. If he is currently without any salary this offer is a bargain. :-) I am sure you will be able to find a job at a school as counsellor or special needs to just start off with while you explore other possibilities such as opening a practice or joining a hospital or clinic. Here in Doha you just need to learn to go with the flow and enjoy the good and laugh in the face of the bad. Doha has a huge support system on FB and you can be sure that every question you ask there will be answered by someone. Check out SASCOM Qatar which is the South African FB website but I am sure you have one as well. Then there is MUMS in DOHA. Good luck with the move if you haven’t done so yet or welcome to DOHA if you are here already.

Hi all!! I would really appreciate some help with this. I am currently on a doctorate programme in educational psychology in the UK after having previously lived and worked in the UAE as a teacher. I would love to do my work placement in the UAE for years 2 and 3 and then work as a qualified ed psych in the UAE on completion of my doctoral studies in the UK. My university will allow me to do this if i can find a psychological service in the UAE with educational psychologists registered with the British Psychological Society (BPS) to take me on. Can anyone help me or know anyone who could help me? Any advice would be much appreciated!

hi sunflowers i am about 15 years qualified as a clinical psychologist - so a bit ahead of you! I work with children and adults and in the UK specialised in expert witness work and child protection cases (very, very stressful). I too saw that ad, but decided not to go for it. I understand there are some research studies happening at the primary care level. Research assistants are needed, but it is mainly basic data collection and number crunching. I approached someone locally but it was intimated that i would be over-qualified. I think the same would be for you too. I will contact you on your email. it would be nice to meet fellow psychologists in doha.

Hi Minegirl, I'm from the US and have a doctorate in clinical psychology. I'm a recent graduate, and my specialty is assessment and neuropsychology. I have worked primarily with adults and also have experience with children. Also, I provide therapy mostly for adults with depression, anxiety, and other issues. I am a bit concerned that psychology may not have as important a role there, as what we are accustomed to here. I haven't found much through internet search, with the exception of a posting for a female child psychologist at Dr. Aju's clinic. I thought I'd take a similar approach, trying to make contacts once I arrived. Another idea I had was to look for work in research through some of the universities in Education City. While I'd prefer clinical work, that might be a good option as it wouldn't require licensure etc. DH is leaving Sept. 30 and I will probably follow sometime in November. My email is . Please feel free to get in touch anytime. I hope everything goes well with your move and would love to meet up once I arrive. Little Spoon, thanks for the article! edited by sunflowers on 18/09/2012

Minegirl - Have you been in touch with the Senior Clinical Psychologist at HMC (article with his name here http://www.thepeninsulaqatar.com/qatar/184077-hmc-to-organise-lecture-on-depression.html) He might not know of any jobs, but he might be able to point you in the right direction. Also might be worth checking on Linkedin. Sorry if you've tried these things already, I just did a quick Google and came up with several articles in the local press at the beginning of year so I thought they might be helpful.

Minegirl, your comment on bringing psychometric assessments with you makes me ask if you are familiar with the BPS Level A and B Occupational testing course? I will be pursuing it soon and would love to get some feedback. Thanks

Hi sunflowers I have not yet got to qatar, due out at beginning of october. I had no luck with sending my CV out, despite assistance from people on the site. I thinking I may have to make contacts in person. I am also not sure how psychology and other 'talking cures align with arab culture and sensibilities. In hope however, I am bringing all of my psychometric test materials with me. There may be a need for psychology services amongst the expat community, either adults or children. (I am totally shocked at how little provision the schools make for children with special learning needs, it seems you are on your own in that respect). what area of psychology are you in? I would love to get in touch.

Also, it doesn't surprise me that you haven't had any luck finding work in Doha whilst searching from abroad. Often things don't happen here unless you're standing in front of HR or a contact. Don't despair!

Minegirl - I know several avenues that you might want to pursue, none of which involve sponsorship. Drop me a line at rox rox rox at earthlink dot net (remove spaces between the three rox words) and I'll hook you up :) Cheers, Roxanne edited by Expat Mum on 02/05/2012

I think your expertise and your services would be very welcome and needed in Doha. But there are a great number of legal issues involved with setting up a business in Qatar, including having to have a Qatari sponsor that owns at least 51% of the business. Licensure is another issue. I'm hoping someone can shed some light on how to do this. Perhaps Qatar Business and Professional Women's Association?
