The Escape Hunt (singapore.escapehunt.com/) is great fun, it only takes an hour and is quite challenging! Well located in Orchard Rd so you can mix in with shopping. Have been here over a week and no mosquito bites so far even in the leafy residential area where we are staying... Didn't seem buggy at all around Orchard Rd and other tourist areas.

Singapore has had major outbreaks of Dengue on and off all year. Yes it's not nice to have ( my husband had it when young) but take precautions and I'm sure you will be fine. We will be there for two weeks and am not worried. The authorities do the best they can by fogging and checking houses with stagnant water from ponds and plants etc.. Mostly contracted in the suburbs where houses etc are. Go and enjoy!

Thanks very much to everyone for the ideas and to Sue R - I'll be sure to take the mosquito repellent!

Without wishing to alarm anyone, our landlady lives in Singapore and she's just told us she contracted Dengue Fever about a week ago and has been very poorly. Apparently it's rife there at the moment and everyone is on high alert. So just be very vigilant about mosquito repellent and the usual precautions.

Definitely the Night Zoo, what a fab experience! Love Singapore :) We did it in the day and had the fish pedicure until it became too controversial I couldn't stop laughing as it tickled and all the school children were taking pictures of me

Definitely a wander through Raffles Hotel, then pop upstairs to the Long Bar for a drink and monkey nuts. Shells are thrown on the floor, it's a tradition! I loved it there

If your daughter likes shopping. Lucky Plaza basement and other floors great for teenagers with latest fashions ( kind if what you'd get if shopping in. Bangkok) and shoes also great here. I go to Bugis junction and by my shoes. Quite reasonable. Asian Civilisation Museum is amazing too.

Happy Hour at City Space , bar on the 71st Floor of the Swissotel Stamford. The views over Singapore , Malaysia and Indonesia are just magical. The zoo ( I am really not a zoo person !) is lovely as are the botanical gardens - although the humidity can make it a bit of an ordeal ! The National Museum is also fun and the restaurant there is really good. I also like to go to the Lobby Lounge of the Shangri La and drink prosecco from the really tall champagne glasses. Living in Dubai we can become a bit jaded when it comes to 5 star hotels but for me the Shangri La which is set in a very lush tropical residential area has a real colonial style charm.

Our best memory from our fortnight Singapore holiday with the kids is of walking from Orchard Street through a fancy residential area in the hills to the Botanical Gardens. Then we walked through the campus of National University to enter the Jacob Ballas Childrens Park. It's a large, varied, magical park. We had an early dinner at the Botanical Gardens' onsite restaurant and the kids preferred the murtabak to the "brown spaghetti". I would go to the cake decorating heaven called Phuan Hat in the Geylang Lorong district. It's all warehouses selling things wholesale, apart from Phuan Hat, and if you turn around a certain way, you are opposite a major bus station and a hawker center (outdoor food court). Cross the hawker center and you stumble upon another great cake decorating shop called Bake King :) There are a lot of malls, shiny and grotty. My fave dept store in that region is Isetan, and there's a great Chinese brand of workout wear called Lee Ning. Daiso in Singapore is sooo much bigger and crazier. I bought a dedicated tofu box. A nice food chain is Toast Box, they sell thick, jumbo slices of white bread covered in peanut butter then cut into cubes with a cleaver and sold with a wooden pick; they also sell lovely pandan chiffon cake. I loved that cake so much that I returned to Bake King to buy the kit to recreate it back in Dubai! Unless you like your bread sweet and milky tasting, don't be lured into fancy bakery shops like Bread Story. Everything looks awesome until the first bite.
