Given the choice, would you rather your child study in an energy hog of a school with little natural light, or in an eco-friendly campus that saves energy and is built with students' wellness in mind?
The Royal Grammar School Guildford Dubai is already being recognized for its eco-friendly design and sustainability efforts after the construction company responsible for the build of the school received the ‘Energy Project of the Year’ award at the latest Big Project Middle East Awards.
The impressive 40,000 sq ft campus, constructed by Multiplex, is set to open in Majid Al Futtaim’s flagship Dubai community Tilal Al Ghaf this September.
The green campus beat numerous nominations from across the GCC and MENA region and was recognized for the school's strong emphasis on sustainability.
Even if you don't fancy yourself an environmentalist, it's important to recognise how the Royal Grammar School Guildford Dubai's green campus can greatly impact your child's quality of life.
The school's eco-friendly ensures that the campus follows RGSGD's innovative approach to learning, is a sustainable hub, and reduces the effects of climate change.
As the first BREEAM-rated project and the first nearly zero energy school in the Middle East, as well as having bold passive and active energy efficiency measures as an integral part of the design, the Royal Grammar School Guildford Dubai campus is already garnering huge attention.
Key features that allowed the RGS Guildford Dubai campus building to be awarded the prestigious ‘Energy Project of the Year’ include:
1. The Middle East's first nearly zero building
Installation of the on-site Solar PV, allowing the school to receive an annual energy utility index of 60kWh/m2. This means it will meet the Emirates Green Building Council definition of a nearly zero building after achieving an annual EUI of 61 kWh/m2.
2. Green from the roof to the walls
The Royal Grammar School Guildford Dubai's 4,000m2 green walls make up the central core of the school. The campus will also feature a pillow inflated roof skylight.
3. Landscaping with children's wellness in mind
The school's landscaping themed design allows pupils to discover higher advanced play elements and explore their limits.
Clare Turnbull, Principal at Royal Grammar School Guildford Dubai, said the school is very happy for the project and their partner, Multiplex, to be recognised with this award.
She commented: "Our goal at the Royal Grammar School Guildford Dubai is to deliver a personalised and forward-thinking educational experience for all our children."
"Our cutting-edge and inspiring campus really supports every part of this. Climate change and sustainability are essential subjects in the school as we endeavor to teach our pupils how to be responsible, not just for themselves, but for their impacts," Clare added.
