Hi there, I grew up in Mudeford which is right next to Christchurch. I only went to Secondary in that area but my brother went to St. Katherine's Primary school which is on Hengistbury Head and was at the time (mid nineties) the most sought after primary. This is quite close to Wick village which is across the River Stour from Christchurch town centre. If feels like a little village in the middle of the countryside but you are a stone's throw from civilisation. I love the area and could recommend living in Mudeford, Southbourne/Tuckton and Wick. Wick or Mudeford/Stanpit would fit the more villagey requirements you have but they are still very close to town. Burton is more in the countryside and very nice and then you've got the new forest with places like Bransgore, Hordle, Sway etc...
I am sorry I can't say more about the schools but if you seek out the nice bits you're sure to find a good school because it's a fairly well-heeled area. Hope this is of help.
Christchurch is a small town . It is a really nice place but not a rural village, you need to drive out a bit further for that. Sorry can't advise about schools though, didn't have a child when I lived there. Poole is my home town, you have the beach, Poole quay and the the New Forest. Great place to live, I think you will enjoy it there:)
bump for the Christchurch people on here, please help with rec's for schools/nice family areas to live in etc...any advice welcome and gratefully received!
Thanks, in regards to areas to live we are looking at the Christchurch area, is this a town or village or are there any nice areas/areas to avoid within this part?

This a a good link, if you do a search, it shows the contact details and ofsted reports for care providers and schools.

If you register yourself onto Mumsnet, you should be able to get loads of info. The forums work similar to EW...and almost as scarey...;)
There is a website somewhere listing all chilcare options in a locality, but can't think what it is (thought it was something called childlink, but might have changed).
A full day at a private nursery costs around 40 - 45 GBP per day, generally 8am to 6pm. This is more geared towards working mums. There should also be local pre-schools held in village halls, which are much cheaper, operating times vary and are much shorter. There is also the option of childminders. From the age of 3, each child should get 5x2.5hour sessions of pre-school education/care free. This is normally deducted from the childcare bill, the care provider give you a form to fill in and the birth certificate needs to be submitted (not sure if there are some criteria there).
Thanks for the info, will take a look at the links!
One of my best mates lived in Poole until this year and has children at primary school there and at nursery. I am off to UK so will ask her for her input and let you know.....it will be from last year as she's now moved back nearer to where we have our house. She won't beat about the bush and will let me know what's best. I stayed there for a few days last summer and it was lovely to walk around and go on the beach - there were some really nice play parks there too for the kids......
Thanks Claire, that would be brilliant!

Hi dorset ladies! I am looking for some advice, we are thinking of relocating back to the Poole area, however, I would like to live in a nice village in a countryside area within a 10 mile radius of Poole. We have 3 small children so the school catchment area is a priority, how do you find out which schools are good etc and how does nursery work too, is the cost about the same as here? Having only ever lived in Dubai with the children I haven't got a clue about how it works back in the UK. If anyone can answer any of my questions I would be most grateful for any help and advice.
