Dubai71, glad you managed to find your way there. Last time I went, I spent an oil well in Lakeland ;(

Lakeland (Mirdiff City Centre) had them last week-end. Thanks simpleasabc. Going to take a trip out there this week... only been once before and it took me hours due to wrong turns. Am hoping this time to get there without incident. Did you make it all right? Did Lakeland still have some? If not, you can have mine, I don't really do enough baking for them to be essential, and I've always happily used dried pulses up till now! that's really kind- thanks. i managed to get them at mcc earlier this week. thanks again :)

What is lakeland? never seen it in MCC. :) Lakeland is the reason I came to Dubai from Geneva :) It's an excellent cook/homeware shop. You can buy online in England, but it's lovely to have access to it! It's on the first floor (I think) of MCC, quite near Home Centre - in amongst the home shops, anyhow! If you look for it on one of the plans in the Mall, you'll find it easily!

Like Icedqueen suggested, I have a dedicated plastic jar full of ordinary red beans which I use, let cool down, then re-use as pastry weights. Works fine.

Not sure what exactly you are looking for but if you looking for beans to weigh down a pastry when baking then you can try using dry chickpeas. It is available in all supermarkets. You will also find dried beans (like kidney or red beans) in the aisle where you find Indian dried lentils.

Not sure over here actually. When I couldn't find any in NZ I was told to use rice on top of baking paper to weigh it down instead of baking beans. Maybe give that a go. Have a read on the google about it.
