My DH when applying for a job recently in the UK had to fill in a form on background, and one of the boxes to tick was: Romani/ Gypsy . Then I told him" Well, I think you probably fit into that one considering we have moved 10 times in the past 14 years and now we don't even pay taxes!" LOL Apparently DH's dad claims that his family were Gypsies hence we have the urge to move every couple of years... Gee i think I must have gypsy blood somewhere then as well lol

just got back from the UK, saw my own version of Big Fat Gypsys. Picture this, its March in England, its cold, even though the sun is out. Went for a stroll around the local market. I see gypsys wearing stiletto boots with hot pants and a boob tube, what made it even more amazing was that it was in Ed Hardy and velour!!! Denim hotpants, skin tight jeans with tiny tops on and backfat spilling out beyond belief. fake tanned up so much they looked like umpa lumpas! Men in sleeveless tshirts, gut hanging out, cigarette haning from the mouth, the 8 kids running behind swearing like I never heard. Eye opening, I could have sat there all day and people watched!

It amazed me that there was almost empathy with their circumstances and lifestyle. I feel sorry for the children being brought up in such a warped world, they rarely even get the basic right to an education. edited by Sticky Wicket on 27/03/2011

Most amusement arcades/fairgrounds etc in the UK are run by what were originally gypsy families and in the West of Scotland the families (who are all related in one way or another!) are very wealthy now and own strings of bars/clubs etc. They are wealthy because most have a history of stealing/ wheeler dealing and none pay any taxes, in return they want everything possible and splurge their wealth on the tackiest clothes known to man. Aspects of their lives in fact resemble that of some others.

Well at least the roads might be finished if they were! ;) But would they work for 800dhs a month, 12 hours a day? I doubt it! :D No they wouldn't be able to afford those wedding dresses on that!

Yes, imagined the CV could be a problem although it's mentioned some, albeit quite few, get university degrees nowadays but my comment was made in jest. Anyhow, hadn't heard much about this community before so was very surprised to see how large it is and how they stick to their old customs and traditions. I felt quite sorry for the women I have to say.

LOL can you imagine, CV please.....................LOL I thought H we Go was being sarky, re all the chav's here. Tee hee. I decided to take her at her word and kindly answer her to the best of my ability. ;) Am chuckling over the CV comment ... oooh, have you watched 'Working Girls' on the Beeb? Verrry good trash TV as well. About young women who don't want to work who are 'forced' to take a job and stop signing on/leeching off their parents. The first ep - Kaycie [lol!!!'> was ... just ... heinous. You must watch it. You'd love it. :D

I'm a non Brit and I watched it and am now trying to figure out whom among the Brits I'm meeting here belong to this particular group. It would be extremely rare, in all seriousness, to find someone from that background living and working in Dubai. For one thing, as was probably made clear in the series, they are so very attached to their communities [even the ones still living in caravans, not 'real' houses'>; their livelihoods, their lives, and most of all, their families are part of who they are. There aren't many traditional traveller occupations which could make the leap to working anywhere in the UAE as a white expat, in my opinion, but of course, I could be wrong. :) LOL can you imagine, CV please.....................LOL I thought H we Go was being sarky, re all the chav's here.

Comedy gold. I watched the one-off some time ago [last year?'> and when I heard that they were making a series, well, I had to watch it. Guilty pleasure and all that. I watched a couple at once, and then the rest ALL at once. Gobsmackingly good trash telly. :D
