i thought the film was good, it did surprise me. I didnt read any reviews before seeing it and felt pretty depressed after it...needed a few Seinfeld episodes to uplift my spirit after!

I watched it and felt the total opposite of tkoshy. Except her comments regarding Mila Kunis. I thought it was slow and the dialogue boring with too many unnecessary pauses. Natalie Portman is being lauded for her part but I feel it is Hollywood hype and not deserved. Mila Kunis on the other hand has been dissappointingly overlooked as far as accolades are concerned. In my opinion Barbara Hersey's character, the mother, was predictable as was Vincent Cassels' portrayal of the artistic director. It did not live up to the hype for me. 3/10.

tkoshy what did you like about it? My liking the movie has to a lot with the fact that I generally watch thrillers/scifi/adventure/comedy. Anything with sad/ ambiguous endings really gets me down. And a lot of movies released in the last 3 months of the year tend to be gritty dramas with said endings. So the Black Swan was more than a pleasant surprise. No long pauses, no slow dialogue delivery, no ambiguous ending. The story and plot move along fast, and while it is a drama, it is also a thriller. Even horrorish ( made up that word, sorry) at times! The story is simple but very well scripted and well visualised. The movie revolves around just 4 people and what a cast they make. It's a Natalie Portman movie throughout but I like Mila Kunis's expressive eyes and natural grace, Vincent Cassels portrayal of the slightly sleazy perfectionist and Barbara Hershey's role as a domineering, repressed , unsuccessful mother. I had no expectations for the movie and it surprised me.That is a sign of a good movie for me.
