yes that is exactly what I was trying to say. the tendancy to say "yes" even when they have no idea what you are asking. For anyone who has yet to experience that...hit up the Overheard at McDonald's thread and it quickly becomes clear LOL!

Going in DIRECTLY and talking to a manager in person is the better way to go about it. First of all, if you ask if it's real shark fin, they are going to say yes whether it is or not. I mean, come on...how many places here tell you they are selling the real thing when it's actually a fake.

also I noticed when you call and ask about the menu item they are just repeating it. In other words just saying "yes, yes " when they really dont know what it is made from Yes, I think (well, hope, really) that the person answering the phone was giving you the typical "yes madam" brush off rather than really informing you of the truth. What might be better is to ask to speak to the manager when you call or even call the company who sponsors/owns the rights to the restaurant. And what again is wrong w/ abalone?

Umm..think you should give the restaurant an opportunity to reply to these accusations before you spread any more gossip...whether it be true or otherwise..or you could find yourself in a bit of trouble

In China Town London normally where there are dishes with birds nest its normally decoration ie., food placed in fried noodles that resembles a birds nest. Right! But there are people who eat the real birds' nests and not the fried yam bowls that look like birds' nests. and my point is double check facts before telling people to boycott the restaurant. Babyrat, the point to boycott the aforementioned restaurant (namely Chizen in my previous post) was due to the fact that they use genuine sharks' fins as Cyclone T had confirmed by calling them to verify. Did I say to boycott them for birds' nests or abalones? The last I checked, they were not on the cruelty to animal list.

The Sheraton at JBR serves the same stuff, and quite an extensive selection. I was shocked. Their Abalone menu alone is enough to make you sick, never mind the shark fin. What exactly is the problem with abalone?

I'm a vegetarian too and will happily boycott these places and let them know I'm doing so but are we sure they are selling the real thing and not the substitute mnetioned below? Maybe the Sheraton is but the prices charged at some of the smaller restaurants might mean they are selling a substitute. I read somewhere that a real Chinese delicacy is to eat food as fresh (as alive) as possible. There was a reference to a monkey's brain being eaten while the animal was dying on the table - that image has never left my mind:-(

After seeing the menu at the Sheraton I almost barfed and simply left. This kind of cruelty should not be tolerated. Simply unbelievable. A great portion of the menu is Abalone, shark's fin, etc.

Obviously you can get real shark fin soup but it would be very very expensive. Crispy seaweed from Chinese Takeaways isn't actually seaweed its fried cabbage and bombay duck from an Indian isn't actually duck at all its fish I believe. Thanks for posting, I won't eat there just for the fact they have a dish called sharks fin soup... it just encourages the ill treatment of sharks :(

A friend e mailed the Festival City management ppl to ask/complain only to be told "you can choose something else, you know". Having said that I had no idea there was a substitute (for sharks fins in sharks fin soup) so I will ring and check tomorrow before continuing my campaign :) Yes, there is a fake kind essentially made of gelatin :-) Any conscientious restaurateurs will not sell the real thing. I think they should just change the dish name all together.

I am appalled...especially at the Sharks Fin soup. For those who don't know sharks are caught (live) have their fins cut off (live) and are chucked back in the ocean (live) to drown (as without their fins they cannot swim) - in their hundreds of thousands every year. I'm starting the campaign for a boycott of this place here and now... Have you confirmed that they are indeed real sharks' fins?
