Nice to meet you all! Anyone ever go to one of those meet up groups? Never been to Chipotle here, but just discover Baha Fresh serves Dr. Pepper!!

I was asking because I was looking to get into nursing. I am an American with a Degree so I have the small prereqs out of the way. But I seem to get the runaround also here and have all but given up . I would hate to invest the huge amount of time and money only to not get any type of transfer credit in the US. I have met 2 US RNs here and both chose not to work here Thanks for letting me know, sophia. You can take online programs from the US, but will have to figure out clinicals. Does American University in Dubai or NYU in AD have a nursing program? The RNs I have found in my research say they wouldn't work here. Sigh....

I'm going to miss is sweet tea; one shouldn't have to specify what type of tea they want, you should just be able to say "tea" and the waitress brings a sweet tea to you. I like mine heavy on the sugar, with a dash of tea. :) Be careful what you wish for ;) Only yesterday I said 'tea' in some place near Al Karama shopping center and the waiter brought me a sweet tea. Unfortunately this was not what I wanted.

I haven't gone to any EW functions yet, just a toddler class with my son at Dubai Marina Mall. Would be up for coffee or something. I live in the Marina and don't have a car, but can ride to metro to MOE or Ibn Battuta easily :) I'm headed back to GA Feb 3rd, but not sure if I am coming back because of the nursing situation here. Nursing situation? I'm an RN, and can't get a straight answer from anyone about how to get my license, etc. Some say I have to have 5 documents attested, then pay for the license, other say none. Either way, I don't want to pay for a license and then get a job where they offer me less money than I make in the US. From what I've read, nurses don't make great money because some of the employees from elsewhere in the world will work for much less than an American, plus they want me to work four 12-hour shifts per week. If you know of a Western-trained nurse here that I can talk to, please let me know! edited by georgiagirl on 05/01/2011 edited by georgiagirl on 05/01/2011 This is my understanding of the licensing: if you plan to work in a government hospital, you will need to be licensed by the MOH. They require that you have your degree and a letter(s) of experience from employers from the last 5 years attested by the embassy in the country you got your degree and worked (I'm assuming the US?). Then they have to be attested again by the UAE embassy in your country, then again by UAE Foreign Affairs here in Dubai. Then you have to go for an interview with the MOH, and assuming you pass, you apply for the license. I think the cost isn't that much, I don't think, but don't know for sure. If you want to work in a private hospital, I think you can be licensed by the Dubai Health Authority directly. They recently changed their requirement to have your documents attested. You just take copies as well as the application form in person to the DHA. They will contact your past employers, university, etc. to verify them, and after that will notify you of an assessment date, and assuming you pass, you apply for your license. The total cost is around 2000 dhs don't phone either of those places as you will get different answers each time, as it sounds like you have already experienced. Go there in person. The MOH is in Karama, and the DHA is in Healthcare City Here are the sites: www.dha.gov.ae www.moh.gov.ae As for work salaries, sorry I can't help you there, but I would think you would earn more in a private hospital or clinic. Sad to say, you are right about other nationalities getting paid less than westerners. I understand you don't want to pay for a license if you don't think you would earn much. I guess it could depend on how long you will be in Dubai - it may be worth the cost if you will be here for a long time Hope that helps :)

We were stationed in Savannah a few years back, but are now in TX. I have two months until I return to UAE and I'm soaking up all the Chipotle I can put in my mouth. If they really have one over there then I will have died and gone to heaven. The biggest thing I'm going to miss is sweet tea; one shouldn't have to specify what type of tea they want, you should just be able to say "tea" and the waitress brings a sweet tea to you. I so miss Chick-Fil-A. I was based in Atlanta and lived in Newnan. Totally loved living there. Kind of miss it too. Except the traffic to the airport at 0630. LOL
