It has been announced that Ramadan is expected to start just over 2 months from now on 17 May this year. Whether this is your first or your twentieth Ramadan in the country, it always remains an interesting experience.

A lot of expats prefer to leave the country during this period while others stay and fast with Muslims. What do you usually do during Ramadan and what tips have you got for newbies who are going to experience their first Ramadan this year?

Don't smoke, eat or drink in public during daylight hours - quite simple. Although, I had visitors once towards the end of Ramadan and my SIL took it quite literally and didn't drink then decided to hike around the Marina.... Suffice to say her head hurt after fainting in the heat.

Last year I threw the whole trolley cart over by deciding to fast from the First Sunday after Ramadan started! It was my first Ramadan in the country and I am thankful that I made the effort to fast with everyone. I will be fasting again this year, it is a rewarding, and fulfilling experience.
