Yes that's what I thought you would say! So.... to try to answer your question it really is up to you I think. It sounds as if you have not been there very long and are still finding your feet. If you don't have to rush off at the end of the day why not try being around a bit longer just once or twice to see what time people drift off to home and family life? It may be of course that they do not have a life outside of the office lol:( . Why not try to hang around a bit on Thursday and see if any one suggests a coffee or something? Unless of course the w/end is when the place is empty after 4.00pm!

No, I never felt obliged. If there was a good reason, such as a deadline then I would stay to help, but other than that, just to show my 'devotion'? No way, I worked to pay the bills and had a life out of work (even if it was just watching TV) so was out like a shot. Never had a problem, was even respected by many for having the guts to do it. I managed my time during work well, and got done whatever I needed to. However, in the current down turn, I know a lot of people are desperate to keep their jobs so are trying to prove their 'worth' and that if anyone should be sacked it shouldn't be them... sadly it probably won't save them, but I understand why people do what they feel they have to.

Yes. You are right. Some people really have something to complete. Most of time, people don't leave just to show they are devoted to the company.

It depends...... why are they staying late at work? If they have a dead-line to meet and you are able to assist it might be appreciated or it may be for other "social" reasons unconnected with work.....

Hi ladies, I noticed that in our dept. the trend is when the time is over (6pm), most of people just don't leave and I feel guilty to leave at 6:15pm. If others stay late, do you have to stay late too? (including the head of the dept.stays late) What do you think? Welcome some suggestions. Xia
