We have guests coming over that have a "Canadian" iPhone.

My question is - if they get it unlocked in Canada, can they just use it as a normal phone here if we get them an Etisalat SIM card?

Last year we just lent them a 'normal' cell phone and gave them a SIM card, which was fine, but I just want to know their options. I have no clue how they work.

It should be fine as I would often switch sim cards when travelling to other countries. This was with the iPhone 3 though. You need a micro sim for the iPhone 4 so if you are willing to "cut" the sim card that you are going to loan to them then it should work.
