There used to be a device that helped with this. Maybe google it. I remember reading on a mothers forum in the US about a few ladies that had a small battery operated device that assisted with weak pelvic floor muscles lol - trying telling Dubai customs that's what it's for!

Excuse my ignorance, but why is it such a good idea to do pelvic exercises? So you can sneeze without having to stop walking and cross you legs! lol I should maybe start doing some... jumping on the trampoline or having fits of laughter prove to be quite difficult now! ha ha

Noshi, looking at Michelle's videos, you'll probably need to send her an email and ask her to send you the video on 'how to find your pelvic floor muscles' so that you can do the other exercises she's got on the website with confidence. You're not going to be sent any spam or anything, I promise! Also, although Brisbane is under water at the moment, her suburb is fine, so she should be able to get back to you quickly. Friday is a work day in Australia, remember :)

Hi Noshi. Have a look at the videos on this website - Michelle is a physiotherapist who specialises in this area and she has set up her free website so that women who can't consult with a physiotherapist can get proper training in these essential exercises. I know Michelle personally, so I can vouch for her intergrity and professionalism, she is one of the leaders in this field in Australia. http://www.pelvicexercises.com.au/about-michelle/ You shouldn't hold your breath, do try to breathe normally. You may be trying to contract the wrong set of muscles if the breathing affects it. Secondly, although the hormones released for 1-2 days just prior to your period beginning actually weaken your pelvic floor muscles, they are back to normal again once your period starts. So you should have no trouble doing the exercises while you have your period. If you can get out to see a physiotherapist, Anne Millen is an Australian physiotherapist who works at the Dubai Physiotherapy Clinic 04 349 6333 in the Jumeirah Town Centre. She specialises in this area and has over 25 years of experience working with women from all cultures. She's a lovely lady, I'm sure she'll make you feel comfortable about this subject, AND get you sorted out and on the right path.

No, you are not supposed to hold your breath. My physio helped me get it right cos like you, I could only do it whilst holding my breath. Get someone to coach you through it. Get them to feel your pelvic area by gently digging their fingers in at the side. Pull your pelvic floor up and get them to count and hold while you concentrate on breathing. They will be able to feel when you have dropped the hold and can get you to start again and carry on until you get it right. It took me a while and I still have to concentrate while doing it or I end up holding my breath. Yes, as far as I know, having our period shouldnt influence it, but I stand corrected.
