I would keep baby tortoises in a run of some sort so they can be kept an eye on. I have never had problems with the cats but dogs seem to be more interested.
I would suggest you google Sulcata tortoises, they do get very large! however you would be very welcome to a pair if you think they would be what you are looking for.

Hi Frampton - so sorry for late response. We were thinking of adopting ones which are a bit bigger as we have two LOs (5 and 2) and were worried that tiny tortoises might get underfoot - what wold you recommend? Also, should I be worried about baby tortoises in my garden if we have neighborhood cats wandering in and out? TIA!
We have several baby Sulcata tortoises that hatched this year. Although they are tiny now they do grow very large. Both parents have CITES certificates.
