I have truly confused myself by reading far too many old threads here and far too many Trip Advisor reviews on Malaysian beach resorts!

DH and I (no kids) want to go in April - preferably there would be a gorgeous hotel, a stunning beach and maybe some activities...our budget is not huge (say 5k for 7 nights - seems very do-able according to Expedia).

I have nothing against kids, but would prefer not to be somewhere where it's full of screaming children :)

Is Langkawi the best place?

I thought the Datai looked lovely but couldn't find anything there in our budget sadly. I've decided to go with Casa Del Mar...it's got rave reviews so let's hope it lives up to them! Now just need to finalise booking and flights. Not a day goes by without me wishing i had a PA! :)

We got a great rate at the Datai in Langkawi, kids not banned but has sister hotel at the other end of exclusive beach which caters more for families.

It did not bother us, the Bon Ton have a driver that can take you to the nearest beach, we hired a car for a couple of days and Bon Ton supplied a picnic and we set off for the day we found a fabulous beach but I am sorry I cannot remember where it was. The best beach I have ever been to is in Maurtius at Troux aux Biches, it was pinky hued and like icing sugar, fabulous.

Thanks so much for all the advice! Did the lack of beach at the Bon Ton bother anyone? I was sort of dreaming of lazing on lovely white sand... The location of the berjaya seems fab, but there are such mixed reviews i'm finding it hard to choose! The internet is a killer when it comes to holidays, it can be so helpful but still it can make it impossible to choose!

Hi I definitely would recommend Bon Ton Resort in Langkawi, we stayed there for Christmas two years ago and it was absolutely fabulous, we took our teenage girls there who were 15 and 17 and they loved it too, there were no children other than ours, but I do not think it is a place to take small children as there is no kids pool or activities. Definitely a place to chill out, the food in the restaurant is amazing the menu you can see on line and Rick Stein the chef stays there, definitely a place for a grown up holiday. An if you need any more info let me know, I would go back in a flash and hope to go again when my youngest goes off to Uni. Bunny

Is Langkawi the best place? I think it's really depend on what you really want to do during your holiday. If you fancy diving/snorkeling, I would say that Sipadan Island in Sabah (http://sipadanisland.blogspot.com/) is a much better choice. Quiter too and more natural. Langkawi has more activities to offer. I love the Andaman hotel but it's isolated and more suitable for people who love forest and mountains. My friends enjoyed their stay at Tanjung Rhu beach resort (http://www.booking.com/hotel/my/tanjung-rhu-resort.html?sid=8fb7074dbfdad303bed86efc6e6d5b0e;checkin=2011-04-14;checkout=2011-04-20;srfid=d3ba5855ee4c2442fdebf6cccdca4b05X14). I have been to Bon Ton but long before this new development. If you love seafood and want to indulge on cheap seafood eating holiday, I would recommend Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. If you don't fancy climbing Mount Kinabalu, you could always go to Kundasang. There were children at both, grown ups and couples made up the majority of the guests. The Bon Ton has a much more boutique, ethnic, shabby chic, grown up feel, the restaurant in it is fantastic. Are you looking at the Bon Ton or Berjaya?

We stayed at the Berjaya resort in Langkawi last April, it was lovely, right by the beach, the setting was stunning. Not sure how much it was, DH did the booking. http://www.bontonresort.com.my/ There's also a lovely small boutique hotel called The Bon Ton which is really nice, but it isn't right by the beach. <em>edited by Sugarbeach on 09/03/2011</em>
