Hi Motherto3, I was just searching for something else and saw your message and that you hadn't heard from anyone, and you are obviously worried with such a big decision to make. It may be worth you starting a post on BRCA/gene testing in case anyone can help. It may be worth you calling the Gulf Cancer Centre and asking for a consultation with Dr Rizk, an Oncologist there. He seems to have a very good reputation and may be able to advise you.

Hello ladies, I am new to the UAE as of August. I am 34 and BRCA1+. I am supposed to have a mammogram altered with an MRI every 6 months due to the gene and family history. I live in Al Ain and have joined the Angels of Mercy support group, but am still trying to figure out the initial steps in requesting a mammogram or MRI, and figure out if insurance will help. Last week I informally met an Oncologist at Tawam, and after telling him my history, he suggested double prophylactic mastectomy. This confirmed the same recommendation as my doctor back home. Has anyone had such a major surgery done here or reconstruction? I'm very nervous about it all. Thanks!

Don't want to sound negative, but results of mammograms are often misinterpretered by the radiologists who have to read them. Unfortunately a couple of my friends lost a breast due to poor judgement. It was not cancer after all. Always get a second opinion and keep testing your own breasts under the shower every day, because you will know if anything is changing. Can only speak about LDC, but there they are read by the GP, radiographer and a senior radiographer and anything suspicious is referred to a breast surgeon (not a cosmetic one!). Agree with you that anything suspicious should always be looked at by a qualified breast surgeon.

What is the best time to have one: immediately after the period or? I had my basic at 35, now I am 41, have regular ultrasound check-ups but is it time for another one? In some places they recommend to have them around the age of 50 if you don't have problems. Also in Europe they take 2 X-rays, while here they are following the American system and have 4, two for each breast. 40 then as advised dependant on what is found, yes i had the 4.

Just had my first one done at City Hospital last week - digital mammogram and ultrasound with Dr. Alex. My whole experience was good. Highly recommend Dr. Alex - great bedside manner!!

Had one done at Allied Diagnostics last year and they were excellent. They had just taken delivery of a new machine and it was nowhere near as uncomfortable as the ones in the UK.

Also someone posted this link, havn't used it but if i had an issue i would be wanting to see a breast surgeon like this one. http://www.wellwomanclinic.ae/team_kazim.html Having found a lump a few months ago, I can thoroughly recommend Dr Kazim - she also works with a superb SA breast radiologist at Cty Hospital, Dr Alex (who did my biopsy) - both amazing women and the type that make you feel calm and completely looked after the minute you meet them. Can't recommend them highly enough

I second Allied Diagnostic in Satwa. Have been having mammograms for a number of years now (family history!) and can honestly say that I find them very good compared to previous experiences.
