Thanks BMAP. They have been told to stay in their home as they aren't going to be affected by storm surge( which is now predicted to be around 4m......on top of high tide!). Thankfully her partner is with her- he was due to fly to PNG this morning!!

Sgilli3, you must be so worried about your mum. My thoughts and prayers are with her and the rest of your family and friends. I really hope she's somewhere safe after this morning's news of the upgrade to 5 and the fact that's it's arriving with the tidal surge. I just feel so sick and powerless sitting here in Brisbane watching it unfold. I'm rootbound today, can't do anything, can't concentrate on anything, just keep scanning the weather sites hoping beyond hope that somehow it miraculously changes course. Many people and farmers up there have only really just recovered from Cyclone Larry in '06. This may break them! For those interested, there is a guy from the storm chasers forum who has headed across to Ingham and is going to be uploading pictures as things progress to this thread: http://www.northauschasers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=597&start=350 There is a lot of real time information, photo's and chat on there from people who understand the structure and behaviour of these storms. It is compelling reading, but I also feel uncomfortable looking in from the outside as it will so clearly be catastrophic for so many people and their livelihoods. Don't quite know how to explain it. Somehow feels...wrong. Anyway, thought I'd put it up here in case it helps anyone far from home...

Thanks for your kind words and thoughts for my mum SJAussie. Xx Spoke to her again this morning,& they are bunkering down now. They have prepared the property & themselves as best as they can.I have just finished registering them with the Red Cross,so they can be tracked/ located easier after the storm passes. This has made it a little more real & frightening for her....& us. Current news says that mandatory evacuations are in place for those living in areas that will be affected by the storm surge...which also coincides with high tide tonight! This is going to be a terrifying storm!

Just off phone to my mum( far north QLD) & they are evacuating people in her area. She has decided to stay at this stage as they are on a large property & they are still trying to secure all their stock etc. The country as a whole has taken a battering over the past few months- our small town is still mopping up after our 2nd once-in-a-100-year-flood,within 4 months! My thoughts & prayers go out to all affected. sgilli3 - thoughts are with your Mum, I hope she and her stock are ok and make it through ok with minimal damage. Fingers crossed for your family. It must be worrying to see it developing heading their way. My parents are in Hervey Bay so whilst watching it anxiously for the rest of QLD, are relieved it not near them this time. FYI - I find the site www.bom.gov.au/qld one great to track it on.

Yes, the only saving grace is that it's not expected to hit until tomorrow night so the evacuations are taking place with plenty of time to spare. Hope everyone stays safe and it weakens before it gets to the islands or crosses the coast. But agree, it's not looking good though.

Yes, it's not looking good. People are very scared as it is so big (500km) and with a 100km eye, I think I read somewhere. They have evacuated everyone from the Barrier Reef Islands today in anticipation and asked others in its path to forget their homes and just get out - especially if they are in low lying areas as they are expecting large scale flash flooding in areas that were inundated only 3 weeks' ago. Here is live footage for those interested in plotting its route: http://www.goes.noaa.gov/sohemi/sohemiloops/shwvgms.html I wish someone would cut us a break...

Cyclones off Qld and WA. We had a nice couple of weeks of sunshine, but thanks to cyclonic weather up north it's been drizzling here in Brisbane again today.
