Don't be tempted to buy bait as the mouse/rat will eat it, die an AWFUL death then go and die somewhere that a pet or wild animal may eat it and also die an AWFUL death. edited by Green-ish on 24/03/2011 I lived in an old house in London when i was a student, the one-way valve on the sewer drain broke and the basement / ground floor was infested with sewer rats, the council game and put down poison and the little rats died in the wall cavities and under floor boards, we had to run from the front door up the the second floor to escape the stench of rotting rat for months..... it really was the most disgusting smell ever..... and to make it worse the front door had 4 locks on it so it took forever - got very good at holding breathe and running....

With genuine apologies fianna, I'm giggling at your husband being "freaked out by it". ;) The poor wee rodent will be far more frightened of him than he should be of it. Send him off to ACE where he can choose either a humane trap (catch it and release it far, far away) or one that will do it's best to kill the mouse/rat. If you choose one to kill it, the spring-loaded neck-breaking kind, you'll need to be sure of rat or mouse to buy the appropriate size. Don't be tempted to buy bait as the mouse/rat will eat it, die an AWFUL death then go and die somewhere that a pet or wild animal may eat it and also die an AWFUL death. ETA - for bait in the trap, freshly burnt toast is irresistible to them. edited by Green-ish on 24/03/2011

Depends if you want it dead or alive? We had huge rats in the garden in Jumeirah, we tried the humane way of putting down a sticky trap but the rats were so big and strong they would walk straight through it, take the cheese and leave. In the end municipality had to come as we discovered a nest with 4 babies. i went out for the afternoon.

Just discovered a very big mouse, probably rat in the house. Hubby is pretty freaked out as he was the one that discovered it. It's now, hopefully locked in the laundry room but what do we do with it?!?
