Can someone please tell me what these are and where to get them. What is the difference between a purple heritage carrot and a normal carrot. And are they actually purple.

There were bags of "rainbow carrots" in waitrose last week. Didn't notice them this week though.;) Call me old fashioned but I like my carrots to be orange.

But is there a black lab.? Just wanted to say a big thank you to Tessa for making me interested in EW again. I'll have a look in Waitrose tomorrow and report back on any vegetables of strange colour x

I suspect we might get on couch potato! Aga is always at correct temperature - that is the whole point of them. DH hates horses and hunting. They get in the way of the 4x4 on narrow country lanes. Although cyclists are worse. Not much grouse round here - los of roadkill venison and pheasant though. Purple carrots are, well, purple. They look like carrot shaped beetroot. They taste like carrots. Best trimmed not cut but served caramelised and roasted. In the 'Olde England of Yore', say Shakespearean sort of times all native carrots were purple. Orange ones are a more recent immigrant variety that have now (a bit like grey squirrels) taken over from the natives.

1. Pour a large glass of drambuie 2. Assemble staff on stone flagging 3. Reprimand staff for clumps of moss found from earlier labrador walk, on stone flagging 4. Advise staff to heat aga to suitable temperature 5. Advise staff to chop purple heritage carrots in the appropriate direction and place beside grouse in oven dish 6. Call DH in from The Hunt 7. Reprimand DH for ruddy cheeks and excessive excitement 8. Send DH to the pool to calm down 9. Sip more drambuie 10. Reprimand Labradors 1, 2 and 3 for being in the way 11. Assemble staff in kitchen 12. Instruct staff to serve grouse/purple heritage carrots with lashings of ginger beer and apple pie/custard at precisely supper (not dinner) time

I've never seen them before, but now I want some. Maybe someone could help me with cooking instructions? I only have an aga unfortunately!
