I just saw this in the paper:

The boy in it will be an adult in four yers. And then what? Qualified people are struggling to get jobs these days and as so many people are struggling worldwide STILL having not recovered from large financial losses in the past decade, so many people are being ignored because everyone is trying to save themselves.

So rather than giving money to charity, would you give your time to help others? There are many good people who love helping but who do not have the money to donate as their children also need new school shoes.

If something was set up where you could volunteer your skills, abilities or time (online), ow.d you be part of it? For example, hosting a language class once a week for high school students and assisting them, or homework help classes.

The main audience would be children so even if you offer to read a story and have a little video to give them a caring voice and feed their brains. It can be in any language.

Would you be interested in doing this? Would you sign up for it?

So sad :( I would definitely be willing to use my days to volunteer to teach them if I wasn't working full-time now (my own kids take up my time after school). Your idea about providing online learning is a good one -- maybe even some single or retired teachers abroad would be willing to volunteer. But would these families have reliable computers and internet access? I think there are a lot of women not working here, and I'm sure some sort of initiative could take off to provide them English conversation classes, reading and writing assistance... in-person is certainly best if possible. Better English skills could take them a long way in being able to use free online resources like the Khan Academy to study other subjects. I'll post about it in the Mirdiff Mums list since Sharjah is relatively close to us - maybe some women will be interested in volunteering and we can try to get in contact with families in this situation.
