relocating - anybody familiar with Melbourne bayside area (cheltenham, sandringham, brighton, beaumaris....)?

We will be relocating to the Melbourne area at the end of this year. My husband will be working in Dandenong, but we would like to live in the bayside area, as we do not want to loose the beach-lifestyle we are enjoying so much in Dubai.
Anybody on the forum that has lived in this area and who could give some quick advice on family friendly neighbourhoods and good (public) schools? We have 3 kids aged 8, 5 and 5.
