Has anyone completed this visa run recently? Ive never had to do this run but I met someone the other day who has to go this weekend. Ive done a search and have a rough idea of how it all works but if there's anyone out there who has done it in the last couple of months, any info on how to get there and how the process works will be much appreciated. Does it still cost AED200 per visa ? Is it possible to take a hire car ?

10 day grace period applies to 30 day visit visa holders only - visa obtained at an entry point 2 week overstay = 4 day fine = 100 exit stamp + 4 x 100 (100 for each day) = aed 500

Huge thanks to Dally and Vertical for such quick and helpful responses. This is just what I was hoping for. The lady in question thought her visa was valid for 60 days and she's overstayed by at least 2 weeks. I know there is a grace period so hopefully the overstay won't be too hefty. If I remember correctly, I think the fine is on a sliding scale too (ie more expensive for first few days then there is a reduction in the amount charged ?). Thanks again girls.

Check with hire car company, all the companies we used only allowed journeys within UAE. We did buy special Oman insurance near the border, but you really still don't have hire company's permission to take the car out of UAE. I was a nervous wreck, but I am quite a worrier over such things. :\:

Did a visa run couple of weeks ago. It is really very straightforward and simple ... and so boring 1. Drive towards Hatta/Oman. There will be couple of checkpoints before the 'real' border where you maybe asked to show your passport before they let you drive further. 2. At the border: park the car, go to the booth/checkpoint, give them your passport and ask for exit stamp. They stamp, give the passport back with a paper slip for the car. 2a. If you overstayed an additional paper (bill) is given which you take to the immigration office some 50 meters away where you pay and get a receipt. Go back to the original booth/checkpoint, give them receipt and collect your passport. 3. Drive to Oman some 10 km. 4. Once there - cannot miss it - big building, parking lot and signs 'new visa' - park, go to the building, fill-in short form; give the form, passport, car paper slip and 200 to one of the 'tellers'. They stamp the passport and paper slip and give them back to you. 5. Drive back towards Dubai. At the border (same border as in point 2) go to the Immigration building, get a new entry stamp and car paper slip stamp 6. Go (drive) to the booth/check point and give them the slip Car insurance that covers Oman is required. (Nobody ever asked to see it) Apparently standard UAE-insurance covers Oman so there is no problem. Cannot see any reason why the same rules wouldn't apply for hire cars. Just make sure the insurance covers Oman.
