Hi all - question from the UK on behalf of a friend who is moving to Dubai in the next few months. Is it legal for an unmarried, unaccompanied man to employ a live-in maid?

I didn't think it was, but he claims that he knows of someone who does at his company. If - as I assume - it is definitely not permitted, has it ever been allowed in practice in the past? Or might it just be that the man he knows of could be temporarily alone in Dubai, having employed a maid before his wife and children came out to join him...? Or would that also not be allowed? Does the agency have to see evidence that there's someone other than 'sir' living in the villa/apartment?

(This guy is a terrible slob, but don't ask me why he's even thinking he needs someone full-time.) Thanks in advance.

Can you imagine if this was legal? All these girlfriends would be being told to pretend they're the housemaid so they don't get busted for living illegally together! Fun times explaining to the police [b'>why a 27 year old British woman with a degree is a cleaner...[/b'> So you don't think the line, "Well she can earn more as a cleaner here than she can in her own country" will wash then?

it is NOT legal. you have to be married. He can hire a maid from a cleaning agency. she can come everyday to clean. I really dont see the need for a full time live in maid here.

My husband has an employee who has had a live in housekeeper up until about two years ago, when they got engaged- they're now married and are expecting their first child....just saying! Lol ;)

They are not allowed to employ female maids but I do believe they can employee house boys...they of course can have a daily agency maid come in, just not sponsor.

We couldn't sponsor our maid until my visa was sorted (husband had his already)...took a while as our marriage docs had to go out of the country to be attested. We shipped the poor lady back to sri lanka to wait it out. I don't believe single fellows are allowed to employ domestic workers. Mind you, this was 3 years ago.

No it's not legal although people have been known to get around it by employing the maid on a normal "company" visa rather than a maids visa. You'd want to be careful not to get caught in an inspection though!
