What are the pros and cons of living in Switzerland? Is it a great place for kids and expats? Thanks

With regards to racism, I believe it does depend where you live, simpleasabc and I have discussed this. I think the German part of the country can be quite unwelcoming! Also as Swiss sandy says, so many companies are moving there, perhaps attitudes will change. Having said all I said if DH got offered a job there I think we would seriously consider it.... It is a beautiful country and I love visiting my sister in Zurich.

I would agree with most of the pros and cons mentionned by Swiss Girl. In the pros I would add good food (if like European food), great summer festivals, great public transport, proper seasons. In the cons not very good customer service, lack of take away options and Swiss people can be quite reserved so it might be diffuclt to make new friends (but then again I had the same problem in the UK). As far as the racism that Mrs Laughan's sister experienced DH (who is British) never experienced it. Even after 3 years of living in the French part he didn't speak very much French mostly because every time he tried to speak French people replied in English or made extra effort for him to understand them using bits of English and French. so I think it pretty much depends where you end up living city or country side. It always harder in a small village if you are the only foreign family there. With more and more companies using Switzerland as European headquarters, the expat community is growing and a lot of people speak English on both side of the linguistic divide but how you are welcomed also depends on how much effort you are prepared to make! As far as schools are concerned the main problem is that in the public school system if your children don't speak French/German they are put in a special class for them to learn the language with all the other immigrant children and the levels of schooling can be quite big. I would advise private school if you can afford it as the education will be much better.

My Sister has lived in Zurich for 7-8 years. They have a fantastic lifestyle (at huge cost), the live looking over a field and have fantastic walks and mountian bike tracks thru the wood from their door, yet they are less than a 5 min walk to the train (FANTASTIC public transport), however I don't think she has still got used to the blatent racism she encounters very regularily b/c she is not swiss german. They really did struggle to develope a social network - they have now got a great circle of friends....but I don't think any of their close friends are swiss german........and then if you are anything other than white...well frankly I just wouldn't live their, as that takes racism to a completely different level. So like anywhere it require compromises...it just depends what you are prepared to compromise on. Oh and schooling is expensive...they tried going the whole local school route, but my nephew was severely bullied (basically b/c he wasn't swiss), so they eventually moved him to the International school. Very hard to get spots and it is close to CHF40,000 a year plus, plus, plus

I may have mentioned before that when I first moved to Geneva from London, I was flummoxed to be told: "Geneva's a great place to get away from"!

It really depends where in Switzerland. The French and German parts have very different feels to them. I love Geneva but you couldn't pay me enough to live in Zurich. You won't find a lot of the conveniences we get used to in Dubai though. Shops close at 7 pm and all day Sundays, and customer service is not great. Life is quite expensive, so make sure you have a really good package. In Geneva it's incredibly hard to find a flat, and rents are astronomical. I think its quite hard for expats to be integrated into swiss life and know swiss people, but there are large expat communities in Geneva and Zurich. I think living in one of the small villages could be quite lonely though. On the positive side there is a very good work life balance and lots of nice outside sports, and it's a great place for travel.

I feel much about Switzerland as the lady who's getting a divorce does about Dubai. Les chevaux pour les courses. I find driving much harder in Geneva than here, because of all the people riding Vespas and motorbikes who think they have right of way everywhere and are extremely dangerous.
