Sorry this is such a boring question compared to the butcher jokes:-) but our washing machine has stopped working and the repairman says it will cost 700dh for the parts alone as it's the timer that needs to be replaced. I think it might be better to get a new one?

The model we have is a Whirlpool frontloader and it's about 5 years old and dh thinks it cost over 3k when we bought it. Is that the normal life cycle of a washing machine? The last one we had was a Simpson top loader that we brought with us from Australia and it lasted for over 10 years -but I guess it did not have all the complicated electronics. I used to do the washing but the maid took over by degrees and I somehow feel she was less than careful with the controls.

I'm going to look up the price of new machines but can anyone recommend a brand? I'm not really keen to go with Whirlpool again. Thank you.

No worries - thanks for letting me know. Hope it's more successful than the last one. Right - really must get on with putting mine on the classifieds. DH would be so pleased if it wasn't in the way anymore!

Completely understand what you mean about the warranty, so no worries at all. Just let me know. From your username are you actually based in the Ranches? I'm in Victory Heights, so if you wanted to look at it (no obligation or pressure at all) you'd be very welcome and I'm not very far away from the Ranches. Pilotsprincess, just wanted to let you know that dh bought a washing machine today - another Whirlpool! I was so annoyed. As he likes warranties he paid an extra 175dh to extend the warranty to 3 years. Good luck with selling your machine.

Crikey, those Hyper Panda prices are cheap! We never looked there, we didn't know about it when we first arrived and are the other side of town anyway, not that that makes much difference.

I went yesterday to Hyper Panda and also found good prices. Do you think this is the cheapest place or should I do some research?

Hi... sorry for the question, but what C4 stands for? I also need to buy all kitchen appliances: washing machine, kitchen, fridge, etc. Where is the cheapest place for these things? Thanks a lot C4 stands for Carrefour. It's the hypermarket at Mall of the Emirates, Deira City Center, et cetera. And it is probably the cheapest place to get electronics though may not have as much variety as a specialized electronics store.

C4 is Carrefour (means crossroads in French, nothing to do with the number 4!), hypermarket. We found BetterLife was cheaper than Carrefour or Geant for kitchen appliances. edited by simpleasabc on 27/03/2011

Thanks Juzzrach. Pilotsprincess, I'll tell dh about your machine. I think he might like to buy a new one just because you get a warranty. I'd never have thought you'd have your maid stepping around a washing machine in her room:-) Always wise to cover your back on here though! Thank you for your help. I hate buying a new washing machine when I could spend the money on something so much nicer. Completely understand what you mean about the warranty, so no worries at all. Just let me know. 5 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My goodness that's now a historic artifact! About every 3 years and LG are one of the best, go for a AAA or AA rating. Anywhere from 800 dhs up.

We bought an LG washing-machine from the LG shop in the MoE. I don't know much about it, except it was the cheapest available and it works fine for us. We don't use a dryer, just put stuff outside to dry.

Thanks for your replies. Our machine is inside in a recess so well away from sand. I just thought the machine would last longer than 5 years as it was the most expensive model at the time but then it gets a lot of use. I may just go to C4 and buy the cheapest model Juzzrach, may I ask approx how much the LG was? I looked up Better Life which stocks a few brands but they don't give any prices on their web page. Thanks I think it was around 3700 from C4

I've got a Siemens machine, hardly ever used, that I want rid of, but haven't gotten round to putting it on the classifieds yet. Bought for an apt, then moved 3 months later to a villa which had fully fitted new appliances. Our other one has sat surplus to requirements in our maids room for the last year. I'd have to go and find out the info on it, but seem to remember it was a fairly good one when we bought it (c.3k), had a large wash kg and lots of different wash options. We are looking for c.1700aed for it. Let me know if you wanted more details. Otherwise your post will actually prompt me to put it on the classifieds! My husband will be thrilled - I think he's had enough of it cluttering up our maids room. PP ps - we don't have a maid! I'm not making someone live with a washing machine in the middle of her room.;)

The life of a washing machine also depends on where it is being stored. Our laundry room is an outside room so sand and dust can get to it, cos as we all know doors and windows fit really well here. Ours is a Whirlpool and I would be happy if it lasted 5 years

I went into Carrefour three years ago and looked for the cheapest one with the biggest capacity, it happened to be a Campomatic (same as my water cooler)....it made me chuckle as its a brand name you would expect to find on the computer game called the SIMS heheh its still going strong and hasnt ruined any clothes. Might not be a big brand name, but it washes great!

I recently bought an LG Direct Drive from advice I asked for here on EW. I have since found the machine to be completely brilliant.
