What salary would we need to live in Dubai?

Hello, My husband and I have been to Dubai a few times and love it. During our last visit he was offered a job as a kitchen designer with a monthly salary of 12,500 AED and told that with commission from sales he could make an extra 8,000 AED per month.
I currently work in the civil service (for UK Visas and Immigration) and we have a 3 year old son attending nursery here in the UK.
We wanted to find out what the minimum salary would be for us to be able to relocate to Dubai and live comfortably. I will also be working but am unsure what sort of work I will be able to find at the moment as although I have been looking for the past 6 months there are very few vacancies at the British Embassy. I am currently doing a part-time course to qualify as a teaching assistant.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what our monthly salary should be to live in Dubai? We would more than likely rent a 2 bed flat, in a location that's more downtown (i.e not Jumeriah). We usually stay in Bur Dubai so don't mind travelling for work as long as it's near a metro station. We don't have much of a social life as we tend to cook more at home and maybe visit friends once every 2 weeks so I know we won't have a big outgoing in that department.

Any advice given would be much appreciated.

Thank you

On around 20k, you could both easily survive here if you explore your rental options etc... although, i'm hesitate to say it is definitely enough as you say you have a 3 year old son? Nursery and school fees here can be through the roof

Thank you for your reply. It's helped a lot. We've been getting conflicting information anything from we'd need 40,000 AED to 25,000 Just to live a basic lifestyle. We are still searching tho as it seems hubbys job wasn't as concrete as the employer made out to be!

I did the calculations end of last year and came to the conclusion that you need at least 13,000Dh to live a basic lifestyle with some luxuries. And with luxuries I mean a car, a cellphone contract, internet at home and going out maybe once or twice a month with your friends. I used rent from Remraam / Sports City and also had in my budget that I still send money home every month as well. I agree with Ranstone - don't rely purely on commission. It isn't guaranteed that you'll be getting it every month and you don't want to get use to a lifestyle with a higher salary and then start falling short because sales are slow. Also keep in mind that it is expensive moving to Dubai. There are a lot of hidden costs that you don't think about: deposit for an apartment, having to pay 3 months rent in advance, then only getting to furnishing it, getting a car, a phone contract. We were caught off-guard with just how expensive it would be to move here but with all of that said, if I had to do it all over again, I would! I would do things a bit differently, but I don't regret moving here one bit.

Thank you Ranstone, i'm currently looking at comparing prices from different sites to get more info. I think with our combined salary we'd be looking at about between 20,000 and 25,000 AED. That said obviously it's not a decision we will take lightly (too long in the tooth for that!) but I will weigh up the pros and cons. thanks again

my first advice would be never rely on commission here in Dubai as part of your essential income. Being completely blunt you will need a fair amount more than 12,500 to survive let alone live comfortably as a family, that said comfort means different things to different people. A 2 bed flat will likely eat 7,000 minimum, plus TV/Internet, utilities, nursery fees, groceries, travel expenses, minimum savings for an emergency. Also factor national insurance contributions in the UK to keep your pension rights, possibly retirement savings. Also question whether your husbands employer provides family medical care apart from him, if not you will have to fund this yourself. As you can see 12,500 will disappear quite quickly. I would approach it by making a comparison with your current income and lifestyle in the UK, if it’s lower then personally I would scrap the idea of coming. Many come here because they ‘like’ Dubai and end up blinkered to the costs. It can be a very miserable place to be if you are short of money or end up in debt to survive.
