Our Indian (he is from Kerela) secretary is going home next week for the birth of his first child.

I want to get a little gift for him to take home with him. I was going to get some babygrows from Mothercare. But I am worried about buying the wrong thing, his wife has never been to Dubai. I don't know if she will dress her baby in babygrows? Do Indian babies wear something different to the typical western babygrow?

Also I don't want to cause any sort of offense.

Thanks for the advice.

Long sleeves are okay,it's the fully covered Babygros ( covering the feet) that's not a good idea, because most babies wear cloth nappies instead of diapers. So wearing a fully covered babygro can be quite messy and inconvenient.Hope this makes sense.:)

Thanks for the advice. wouldn't a newborn need long sleeves anyway - I always thought the rule was 1 layer more than the mother? Maybe I'll get something that is 3 - 6 months that is short sleeved?

be a little wary of the baby products... if his mother in law is anything like mine then they wouldn't let even a drop of any 'artificial' product touch their precious lil one's skin! :) although i had my baby in dubai, my dear MIL bought with her cart loads of herbal solutions for bathing, moisturizing, oiling etc. :)

Agree with abby, short babygros, preferably in cotton are the best as it'll be really hot in Kerala now. Toys for newborns are another option alongwith a complete set of baby products like powder, shampoo, lotion etc.

assuming the baby is currently in Kerala i would recommend short sleeved, no leg babygrows... it is very very very very humid in Kerala (I'm from there too!) and babies there are generally dressed in loose cottons to spare them the heat... :) hope that helps... pls dont bother getting him blankets and woollies as it won't be of any use at all! :) maybe a baby playgym mat is also a good gift edited by abby_n_christina on 06/04/2011
