Hi Ladies

DD usually has around 10 hours sleep at night with some brief wakings. She dropped her night feed many months ago although she occasionally takes a sip of milk or water during the night and I say sip because she refuses anything more.

She has been quite good up until about a week ago when all of a sudden she decided she would wake at 4am on the dot and decide to stay awake for at least an hour or so. Prior to this, she would be waking at about 5.30am. Her bed time is 7.30pm. She takes good amounts of milk and solids during the day and as mentioned, when given the bottle when she wakes at 4am, she flat out refuses it.

What has changed? I've read about the regression babies can experience at this age as they reach developmental milestones. She has recently learnt to roll over and really enjoys being up on her feet (she hated tummy time until recently). I've tried putting her to bed earlier and later but still 4am it is. There are no environmental factors which are causing her to wake. I've also tried increasing her night time meal and let her tell me when she is full but again, no major change here. She is has two bottom teeth already and her two top teeth on the way.

I am wondering however whether it is time for her to drop her afternoon nap? At the moment she has three naps that total between 3 to 4 hours per day. The afternoon nap is always between 4.30 to 5.30 and only for 30 minutes. Most of the time she needs to be assisted to fall asleep in the afternoon whereas she tends to self-settle at all her other sleeps (have I just answered my own question?).

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

Hi Denysee1 Sorry to hear about your LO's sleep problems. I contacted www.thebabysleepsite.com as I subscribe to their newsletter and generally find the information helpful. The woman behind the company emailed me prompting and suggested an earlier bed time. Despite us trying this in the past and it not making a difference, we picked three random days over the past week and put our now 9 month old girl to bed earlier anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes. She responded well (not sure why now and not before!) and is falling asleep sooner and with less fuss, tends not to wake as often at night (she slept a whole 10 hours straight without waking once) and is sleeping to around 5 / 5.30am. This morning she woke at 4am, fussed around for a bit but then slept until 6.40! Needless to say we are really pleased. She is also in a better mood in the day time and has a longer lunch time nap. Here is the link to the article which talks about sleep regression at the 8 to 10 month mark: http://www.babysleepsite.com/tag/8-month-sleep-regression/ - hope this helps you too : )

Hi M, I m having pretty much the same issues. My boy will be 8 months on Saturday, he was doing really well but out of the blue he started waking up during the night and be very difficult to fall asleep again. i honestly tried everything: if one thing works one day, it wont work on the next. i m hoping when he actually starts to move about he will get physically tired and will sleep more... lets hope it happens soon.
