Breastfeeding help please....

For the last week I have been really struggling with breastfeeding. I noticed my left breast was really hard and very painful, so I guessed it might have been a blocked duct. I did the usual-massage, feeding frequently from the blocked side and even pumping. The hardness went away after few days. Now I have noticed I have a white spot on my nipple. It almost looks like a blister with milk trapped inside. I don't know how to describe it.

Anyway now when I feed the pain is breath taking. honestly I sit there panting because it hurts so much. And when I'm not feeding, I get a sharp pain from the spot to the back of the breast(like someone has stuck a hot needle through my breast) I have made an app with Dr Dalphine, but she can only see me on Wednesday.

I don't know if I can last that long. Should I stop breastfeeding and give formula instead or just carry on gritting my teeth through the pain. Honestly im not enjoying it at the moment. When it comes to feeding her from hte sore side, I get all tense, it does not help either that DD can sense I'm tense so she ends up crying.

Also another issue that has sprung up is biting. She now has 2 bottom teeth and takes a nibble every so often! it hurts!!! she is 6 months old, so is there a way to get her to stop or make her understand biting is not good. might be a silly question but I am loosing the battle here and bottles are looking real tempting.....

Ps the right breast is ok, no issues there

Hi BFC Thank you for asking, today was better, not as painful. I still seem to have the spot though. I will go see Dr D on Wednesday and let you know what she says. Thank you so much again:)

How are you doing today, Moonbean? If it is a bleb, then you should feel a *lot* better if you are able to remove the blockage. Hope things are better!

Thank you so much!! I knew I could rely on this site for some help!!! BFC the sopt looks like the one in the link you posted. I will try all the self help tips in the links you both posted. I don't want to stop nursing as I honestly love breastfeeding, but the pain is just too much! But I do feel better though. Thank you both!:)

Ouch! Milk blister (bleb) :(. A link which might help till you can see Dr D: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/nipplebleb.html And some great suggestions for biting (which is relatively normal phase which *will* pass, but is not pleasant while it lasts): http://www.kellymom.com/bf/older-baby/biting.html Hang in there! Giving formula will put you at greater risk of mastitis due to the blocked duct :( If the pain is unbearable, have you tried hand expression on that side instead of direct breastfeeding? xx (edited to fix link) <em>edited by BFC on 11/12/2011</em>

Quick reply (as I'm feeding!) but I'm thinking thrush? Have a look at the kellymom.com site. As for what to do for next few days, not sure, there will be more expert advice on the way I'm sure. Check site for advice as well, it's briliant and evidence based. Hang in there!
