cloth nappies leaking

I brought my children's cloth nappies from the States and they are leaking non-stop. I suspect some of my problems are due to the adjustment to an HE front loading washer instead of the top loader I'm used to. Here are my questions:
How do you suggest I "strip" the diapers to remove any residues that could be causing my leaks?
What is a good wash routine? (I'm using Earth's Choice detergent, half the recommended amount and diapers come out smelling clean.)
I'm desperate for help! Hate tossing money in the trash with disposables when the cloth ones are sitting in the drawer unusable.
