I know what you are saying starsouthern, but what I meant was, she should get at least the recommended number of scoops. If she is drinking much more than normal then she probably is getting enough nutrition. Breastmilk increases in water content during hot weather but unfortunately formula is always the same. I believe that under medical supervision it is sometimes ok to give a little extra water to a FF infant (but not recc for a BF infant). You are right though that water toxicity is possible with too much water at such a young age so the extra amount needs to be small (like an extra max 100 mL water in a 24 hour period) and a close eye would need to be kept on her weight.
glad she is feeling better EmmaH :)
Thanks for the responses and just to update...
I havent given DD laxatives for a few days now but still have the milk with one scoop less a bottle and she has pood every day for the last 3 days and the cramping has more or less stopped.
The Dr wanted me to water it down as she wanted to feed constantly, he suggested that she may be thirsty rather than hungry (in this climate) so therefore remove a scoop and she will keep the same volume of fluids but not "overfeeding"
Keeping the same amount of scoops but adding more water to formula still dilutes it, which can mess up the bodies electrolytes and lead to water intoxication. Babies easpecially in the first 12 months need all the calories and nutrients in perfect balance, so mixing instructions on the back of the box should be followed exactly. What you’re doing by adding extra water is allowing water to occupy the space in the stomach that the milk or infant formula should be occupying so less nutrients for the baby.
I would get a second opinion.
And I should have added that even though milk protein allergy is more common than lactose intolerance (in a baby) it itself is also rare. I'm not a Dr but I would have guessed that if you were going to dilute the formula it would be more in the form of same amount of scoops, extra water rather than taking away nutrition. What was the theory in diluting the formula anyway?
I agree with kiwispiers it is very rare that babies are lactose intolerant and that the laxitives will also cause cramping. I would also go to another doctor for a second opinion as watering down formula even by one scoop can lead to malnutrition.
Try changing the brand of formula you use, different brands have diffent amounts of fatty acids and added things in them that not all babies react well to. My two after trying everything out there were only happy with Nan, my son used to do what you described your little one does when he was on any other brand. My friend who had twins had one on S24 Gold and the other one on Cow and Gate because they both had problems with other brands.
Sometimes it's trial and error until you find one that fits.
Hope your little one gets better soon :)
It is really uncommon for babies to be lactose intolerant (there is lactose even in breastmilk) but they can be temporarily so after having a tummy bug, did she just have any illness or the rotovirus vaccine?. Much more common is a cows milk protein (casein allergy) in which case a lactose free formula wouldn't help. You could try probiotics if they are available where you are.
I would think that giving her a laxative would probably be likely to cause cramping in itself. I don't know about FF babies but is the every 2 days that big a deal (I know BF babies can go up to 15 days between poos). Is the poo hard when she goes?
If it doesn't right itself when you go off the drops another thing to consider would be silent reflux, you could try giving her half a bottle twice as often and see if it is easier on her tummy.
good luck, it is so hard to see your little one uncomfortable :(
I had my baby (8 weeks) at the Dr last week as she was inconsolable after having her milk. She is a baby that hardly ever cries so when she was crying constantly i was worried. She only poos every 2 days or so so wanted to get that checked anyway.
Dr told me to "water down" her formula (take out one scoop from each bottle but maintain the same amout of water) and i have laxative drops to put in too. Having done this since last week she still only poos every 2 days or so and now after each bottle she starts cramping and cant settle. Usually about an hour after a bottle she is ok.
I'm now thinking she may be lactose intolerant? Im pretty convinced its not colic. She burps well and f*rts well too....
Anybody got any advice?
After getting up at 3am with her giving her a feed and having to stay up with her (1.5hrs) as she couldnt get comfy as she was cramping (usually she'd have her bottle and go back to sleep 1/2 hr) i'm contemplating changing her formula to a lactose free one? I'm currently giving her Aptimal
