my DS is 3 months old, and BF, he's got his first cold.... Cough and congestion

it doesn't seem to bother him more than it bothers me!

what should i be doing?????

My son got his first (and only) cold at 6 months and it broke my heart. So long as he can BF he is fine and if not, you can suction his nose, I chose not to use the saline drops/suction as there is an increased risk of ear infection and he was still able to nose breathe. Keep him warm (not too hot), plenty of fluids (so extra BF's) and lots of rest so stay home a bit if possible, tummy time when awake and elevate the cot slightly when asleep. breast milk is the best thing for a sick baby. kiwiwhispers always seems to be right on : )

Also monitor his temperature and if elevated (above approx 37.5), see a doctor (who might suggest infant Panadol). The doctor recommended saline spray here, but in Australia I used the saline drops with the pump extractor which seemed more effective. Let your LO rest at home and get some sleep, just as you would do if you were sick. You could also use a humidifier in the room to take the dryness out of the air. Hope your LO is feeling better soon.

One thing that really helps is to bring them into the bathroom when you have a shower - I have put both DDs in their chairs and let them inhale the vapour. Less direct than saline and more effective. You can judge on height (don't want to advocate anything unsafe) but I raised the seat on a table I brought in so they were higher (less steam near the floor). If they are very congested you can then turn them over chest down on your hand and rub their back a bit to loosen pleghm. Hope it clears soon.
