Feeding problems - 4 month old...

For the past 10 days or so LO seems to be very distracted when feeding. If there is anyone else in the room, she will drink the bare minimum to stop her being hungry and will then refuse to take the rest of the bottle. I only realised that this was the reason when I tried feeding her in a quiet room with just the 2 of us. Also she seems to be putting off the bottle teat several times during the feed but not because shes not hungry anymore..... As she is a bad reflux sufferer, I wondered if it could be that. But could it be teething pain either? She is not dribbling a lot nor has red cheeks but she is chewing on everything she can get her hands on. Shes only 17 weeks so maybe a little young for teething.

Im just trying to figure out why she is going off her bottles as she is not feeding as much at all.... anyone else have this experience or has any tips please?

Also would a bigger teat size help or would this just give her wind from the milk coming out too quickly?

Getting distracted is so much worse when they are breastfed! They are happily feeding away then suddenly, yikes, they pull off with no warning giving whoever you are talking to an eyeful. Mmmmmm, you also might find that your baby starts taking exception to you speaking to someone else when they are feeding. Shortly after they started getting distracted mine also started to stop feeding and fixing me with a beady little cross eye if I had a conversation over their head.

Although breastfed, both my babies have been like this from around the 3 month mark onwards, as said below they are much more distractible from this point and cant be bothered taking such big feeds. Feeding in a quiet dark place does seem to help and I simply feed more often, so they still take enough milk just in smaller portions. It's probably not the reflux, but you may find that offering half bottles twice as often, has the added bonus of lessening the reflux, as the stomach is not overfilled so contents don't rise so much. edited by kiwispiers on 02/04/2013

You've entered the distracted phase. She's discovered the world around her and wants to check it all out. Feeding her in a dark, quiet place as frequently as possible will be your best bet for making sure she's eating enough.
