I had a massive must buy list which me and dh went through spending a fortune as hes our first baby but when ds was born his needs were very different from the things we had bought due to him being poorly with reflux/colic (not sure what). We then spent another small fortune investigating each bottle and each teat on this planet lol and buying different things for him. For example bought a very expensive baby swing which he hates and he now sleeps in a very cheap fisher price bouncer purchased just yesterday! I hate all the frilly moses baskets here and had my mum bring one from UK which was again very expensive but its no good for him because he needs to sleep on an incline so we ended up putting him in the cot with a wedge from mothercare. I used to look at all those people who take small babies with them to the baby shops and try out things with the baby before they buy- I thought these people were crazy but it really makes sense now for the big expensive things! Its great to be organised but my biggest suggestion to you all would be to relax and not worry too much because if like me you do alot of shopping you will be slightly taken back once baby is here and you end up spending just as much again all over again. Even if thats not the case its not exactly difficult to pick things up in Dubai with our late night shopping privileges!

Wow you guys were/are organised. My poor little guy didn't even have a name for ages. I bought as little as possible, and still ended up with way more stuff given as gifts than I could use. Especially bottles and dummy's etc, I would wait or just buy one to see if they like it. Muslin swaddles would go on my list. Great for Dubai weather, you can use them as a burp cloth, to swaddle, or just to cover your stroller. Also a few bags of frozen peas for any sore swollen areas and some bath salts. Try to relax and enjoy it. The shops are open late in dubai and i sure someone will pop in and grab anything ou might need. Good luck, it's an amazing time no matter what you have in our nursery :)

there is "must buy" and then there is "good to have" must buy would be carseat, pram, nappies, a change mat and wipes or muslins, pretty much everything is else is "good to have" and a lot is best borrowed. you can steralise by boiing in a pot on the stove and if you EBF you don't need an expensive steraliser, you can bath in the sink or regular bath, but a cheap baby bath is much easier. Mothercare sell a nice big one that you can also buy a foam insert for, it has a drain hole which makes life easier, I'd say flag the ones on stands and just put it on the kitchen bench or table. A change table is very handy if you have a c-section, but only good for a few months as once your baby rolls they are not super safe. I would say if you can, [b'>borrow[/b'> a change table, baby bath and moses basket. buy just one pack of disposable breastpads and figure out if you are a leaker on not, I bought lovely wool ones first time around and it turns out I'm one of those women who doesn't leak. Only buy one nursing bra in advance, you can grow enormously once your milk comes in, its hard to predict how much and an ill fitting bra is painful and can lead to blockages. Unless you plan to use the big cot from day one, that part can wait if necc. Don't buy cot bumpers unless they are the breathable airwrap type ones. Don't buy pram toys or really any baby toys at all, you will get given so many when your baby arrives and tbh they don't even look at them for the first few months. A play mat or nice blanket for tummy time is good, make sure it is easily washable (ie not the big padded mama's and papa's ones), babies tend to leak. :) many hospitals provide you with maternity pads and disposable knickers, check with your hospital. nipple cream, only buy the pure lanolin stuff (medela or purelan) Don't buy your pram too far in advance otherwise the warrenty will have practically expired before you've even given it a test run. Don't forget baby monitor, one that measures room temp is great (likethe angelcare), lets you know if the AC breaks down, room gets too hot/cold etc. edited by kiwispiers on 03/09/2012

a while back i saw a thread which a woman posted a 'must buy' for baby list - anyone have one they could post? I also remember someone saying, they had a detailed excel sheet with their 'research.' This is my first child and any advise is appreciated. :)
