My LO is what I believe they call climber. I'm on my third high chair, and he gets out of everything. Then looks very happy with himself when he stands on the tray tables. The ikea one I loved, I now see as a death trap.

He climbed out of his car seat and crawled into the front seat at 8 months old.
He is always trying to get on tables, chests, climb shelves, pretty much anything.
He can cruise up a storm, but doesn't seem that interested in walking at 14months.

Please tell me they grow out of this and it's a phase, or give me any tips on how to get him to stay put.

He is practicing a skill - its very common. You could try to redirect his behaviour. If he his climbing on inappropriate or dangerous things - perhaps purchase some piece of equipment that he can climb on safely (I had a little tykes slide/tower for my DS). When he is climbing on something inappropriate - take him to his climbing equipment and emphasize that this is the appropriate place to be climbing, not on furniture etc. They are capable of understanding and learning this. Excellent advice! How did I forget that?! Cozy coupe, riding train, tunnels, tent, ball pit, little slide, and wooden bead maze were absolute fabs. But still my little monkey would love to climb the sofa and use as a trampoline!

get a chest clip restraint so he can't climb out of either the pram or the high chair, and add carseat to that list. I just read this article and thought of your post http://www.regardingbaby.org/2012/06/18/1542/

Thanks PJ that's a great idea. I'll look into the little tykes gear. He finds a serious NO hilarious for some reason, and I've found that saying no we don't do that, let's play with (what ever is laying around) works much better, so your diversion idea should work well. The only little problem is that he loves to climb out of his pram at the mall, and out of his high chair before dinner is finished.... So how do I divert his attention then. His favourite book works well at home, but the mall is another matter

Thanks PJ. That's a good idea. I find that he doesnt respond well to the word NO, when said seriously. For some reason he thinks it's hilarious. But when I was trying to teach him not to press every button on the DVD p,Ayer, I figured out that saying no we don't touch that, let's play with the.... (whatever was laying around) worked really well. So you might have hit the nail on the head with this one. I'll look into the little tykes gear. Thanks for the reply :)

Thanks ladies... Nice to know we are not alone. Lou86, you must've died when she fell. Glad to hear that she had no lasting damage. It is so scary though. I have 3 prams and a trike, and he's fine for a while till he's bored, then the climbing starts. He can get out of anything and has been dubbed Houdini by my friends. I'm dreading him trying to get out of his cot. Luckily he goes to sleep really well and is always in a sleeping bag, so I don't think he's figured out that he can climb that yet. He can walk, he's just a super fast crawler, so doesn't seem to want to. He pushes furniture all over the house an uses chairs to climb up to EVERYTHING! Oh well, I suppose one day when he's a lazy teenager that I have to put a firecracker under to get moving, I'll look back on these days and laugh.

It will stop gradually. My second was very active , once he started climbing out from high chair, i had to say bye to it. And let him sit with us on the table. My eldest son actually learned climbing the sofas and many tricks from his younger brother. I have no ideas about crib as we co slept until he turned 3! i really had to be glued to him all the time especially in the kitchen. Had to get rid lots of things in the sitting room to avoid accidents. edited by Flower33 on 16/06/2012

Hi Flydiver I feel for you I really do!! Sorry to say it probably won’t go away anytime soon. My little girl is 18 months old now and is exactly the same, she will climb up everything! the high chair at least twice a day to stand on the tray is a favorite, she likes to climb up onto my dining table to get to the bananas or just to stand on top and watch TV and is always climbing out of her pram when we go out, it’s a night mare! It might actually get worse whens he’s walking because he will be able to move things around the room to help him climb up new things!! The worse accident has been when she tried to climb out of her cot one day and fell flat on her face, her whole forehead went bright purple and her left side where she landed, I was really worried about what to do because she moves around so much in the night I couldn’t take the side of her cot, I’m actually happy to say the fall was so bad and scared her so much she has never tried it again (touch wood) She’s so out good and has no fear, I actually don’t like her wearing dresses or shorts because she ends up with so many bruises on her legs it just look awful!! sorry I couldn’t help and may have even made you worry more, all I can suggest is watch him as much as possible and obviously try to take away as much temptation as you can but he is going to have some falls and theres not a lot you can do about it.. I’m just hoping she will grow out of it sometime soon. Good luck!!
