My DD is 3 weeks old and i am breast feeding but also expressing and bottlefeeding. I have been using nipple shields as finding it easier to feed. She is a really messy feeder and when using either method of feeding she seems to have it all over her chin and running down her neck. Is this normal? Or could it be the bottle/ nipple shields causing her to get so messy? Worried that she may be losing more milk than drinking it. Any advice appreciated.

Hi Rose Congratulations on the birth of your little one! Signs that baby is getting enough milk include: - appropriate weight gain - 3-4 "proper" poos and 5-6 soaking wet nappies every 24 hours - baby contented after a feed (remember that in the first few weeks, babies need to feed very frequently - often including a period of "cluster feeding" in the evenings - so don't worry if she's asking to be fed often!) If these are all happening, then baby is getting enough milk :). xx

Completely normal. Babies let the excess milk dribble from their mouths. I always end up drenched when I nurse my babies. As long as she is going 3 hours or more without seeming hungry, you needn't worry.
