Hi,

My MIL is due to do a stop over here in two weeks and she has just been diagnosed with shingles. Does anyone know if she will be contagious as am concerned for my dd who will be just shy of 8 weeks and won't have had her immunisations yet...?

Thanks!

Shingles is only contagious through direct contact while blisters are filled with fluid. Once they have scabbed over, it is fine. Anybody who has not had chickenpox can get chickenpox from someone with active shingles. I'm sure that by the time your MIL arrives, any blisters she has will be dried up but better check with her first.

Shingles isn't actually contagious, but if you have never had chickenpox, a person with shingles can make you get chickenpox as they come from the same virus. I'm not sure how common it is for a baby to get chickenpox, so I would check with your doctor. I would think that 2 weeks should be sufficient time for her to not transmit the virus, but you never know. Just wanted to also add that he vaccine issue wouldn't even come into play, as you aren't supposed to give the chickenpox vaccine until the child is at least 1 year old. The other vaccines routinely given at 2 months won't protect your child from the shingles/chickenpox virus.
