Hey
I am about 6 weeks pregnant and went to the ER today because of spotting. After finding out that nothing was wrong they asked me to take a blood test to confirm pregnancy. I told them that I had already taken one a week back at the same hospital. And they said that it showed borderline HCG level so they would like to take it again to monitor progress of HCG levels. Does borderline HCG mean that I am not pregnant??? Did they take a blood test again to make money out of the insurance? It really felt unnecessary. Just wanted to know if anyone else had a similar experience!

Some pregnancies have low progesterone levels for various reasons; a viable pregnancy may be saved if this is picked up in time by tracking (among other things) HCG levels. Actually, this isn't the case. I've suffered multiple miscarriages have done my own research and consulted specialists. None of the research shows that a viable pregnancy can be "saved" through progesterone nor can an unviable one be maintained. Although progesterone supplements are a pretty common treatment, none of the research shows they have any impact on pregnancy outcome. There is a very small set of women who need progesterone in order to achieve pregnancy, but not to maintain it. OP, generally they will monitor HCG levels and redraw every 48 hours to see if the levels are rising appropriately. If so, the spotting is nothing to be concerned about. However, if they aren't, spotting can be an early indication of a possible miscarriage. I know this is super stressful to deal with and you just want to be able to enjoy these early weeks of your pregnancy. Please take care of yourself. You cannot do anything to protect this baby nor to harm it. Generally, they should be able to detect a heartbeat on ultrasound at about this stage, so if your spotting continues, I would ask for an ultrasound. <em>edited by Meagle on 11/03/2013</em>

Hi Bakermom This is very wise of them. Monitoring the HCG levels at specific intervals indicates specific things about a pregnancy like - whether it is viable or not, whether it is a "false pregnancy" or even a twin pregnancy. Should the levels not increase sufficiently within two days or so of each other, it may indicate a problem. Some pregnancies have low progesterone levels for various reasons; a viable pregnancy may be saved if this is picked up in time by tracking (among other things) HCG levels.
