After enjoying a cigarette, smokers more often than not throw the end of the cigarette on the street, pavement or gardens but this is soon going to stop. Smokers in Dubai have a hefty fine waiting for them if they are caught throwing a cigarette butt on the street.

The Dubai Municipality has started a new campaign to ward off smokers from littering in order to help keep the city’s cleanliness. A person caught throwing a cigarette anywhere other than the designated areas will face a fine of AED 500.

The fine is applicable both on the roads as well as commercial areas and recreational areas.

So basically everywhere.

According to Gulf News, the fine will be double if someone is caught by a municipality inspectors and then triple for each repeated offence. There are currently 154 inspectors authorised to fine people for littering.

There are a number of things you can get fined for in Dubai, including things like spitting in public, having a dirty car and even hanging your clothes outside!
