What No One Ever Tells You About Breast Augmentation

From start to finish, this is your complete guide to all you should know breast augmentation

The breast augmentation scene in Dubai is just getting bigger and bigger. It's no lie that many women wish to enhance their breasts for a variety of reasons - making them in proportion with their body, improving asymmetries, undoing the sagging effects of age and gravity, restoring breasts after pregnancy, losing weight, or a mastectomy, and more.

Electing to undergo breast augmentation surgery can be both exciting and intimidating. Although the operation provides women with a renewed feeling of reassurance and self-confidence, many are still unaware of what exactly happens when getting the procedure.

If you might be considering changing your breast size, we've compiled all there is to know about the process. Ahead, Italy-trained breast surgery expert Dr. Matteo Vigo who is specialised in breast augmentation, will give a rundown on the surgery including what it involves, possible complications, and follow-up care.

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also referred to as "augmentation mammoplasty" or better known as a "boob job", is surgery to increase the size of the breast. It involves placing breast implants under breast tissue or chest muscles.

A breast augmentation helps women improve the overall appearance of the breasts and cleavage.

Typically, the surgery will encompass three phases: consultation, operation, and recovery. Each step of the process requires patients to remain informed and aware. By taking the time to learn about each phase, you can ensure that you get the results you want.

How to pick the right breast implant size for you

According to Dr. Matteo Vigo, there are many factors that go into determining the best implant size for you, namely:

  • Your actual breast measurements
  • Desired size
  • Characteristics of your breast
  • Your tissue and chest wall

Breast implants are measured in cubic centimetres. That’s why you’ll typically see CC when labeling size, like 350CC. Breast implants come in a whole range of sizes, from about 80CC up to 800CC. Obviously, the higher the number, the bigger the breast implant size. The width of the base also varies, from 7.4cm to 17.2cm.

What is a breast lift surgery

Sometimes a simple breast augmentation is not enough to achieve the desired result, due to sagginess and looseness. A breast lift can be associated to the augmentation Mammoplasty. Breast lift surgery (also known as Mastopexy) helps to restore the elasticity of female breast tissue which can be stretched, most often through factors such as; weight loss, pregnancy and childbirth, breastfeeding or ageing. The improvement in self-esteem and confidence can be remarkable, making a breast lift one of the highest ranking cosmetic procedure in satisfaction.

There are few choices when it comes to the placement of the breast implants you select. They are subglandular (above the muscle), submuscular (below the muscle) or dual plane (upper part below the muscle, lower part of the implant below the gland).

Breast augmentation post-surgery recovery and aftercare

Once your surgery is completed, you must follow all the instructions given to you by your doctor to make sure you heal correctly and achieve that desired outcome.

The following instructions are your obligation. Use this as a checklist of progress as you heal. Included are normal post-surgical experiences and key health considerations that may be a cause of concern.

  • Do not drive a vehicle on the day of the surgery and a week after. The general anaesthetic will affect your awareness and safety
  • Minor scarring under your breast and some bruising is very common after breast augmentation surgery - these will fade after seven weeks. Dr. Matteo Vigo suggests using bio-oil to assist the healing process
  • Your breasts may feel numb, sensitive, or swollen for several weeks - this is normal
  • Avoid strenuous exercise like going to the gym or playing sports as this may open up the stitches
  • Wear a sports bra 24 hours a day for a minimum of six weeks post-surgery
  • Seek an MRI scan three years after surgery, and every two years following that to keep track of your breast health
  • Ensure your breasts avoid direct sunlight and artificial UV for a year
