All Dubai Taxis to Have Surveillance Cameras Installed

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) are busy at work as they're currently fitting taxis affiliated to the Public Transport Agency - national taxis, to you and us - with surveillance cameras.

The new addition to Dubai's taxis are a part of the RTA's ongoing efforts to improve the level of public transportations services used across the city.

By the end of 2018, all of Dubai's 10,000+ taxis will have surveillance cameras installed.

There are currently 10,221 taxis in the RTA's fleet, and over 6,500 of these taxis have already been installed with the cameras to keep an eye on drivers.

Through these cameras, the RTA can monitor the conduct of taxi drivers, and verify the extent of their compliance with the professional driving standards as well as moral attitudes.

"It even motivates them to observe optimal attitudes towards users of the taxi service", shared Adel Shakri, Director of Transportation Systems at RTA's Public Transport Authority.

"The footage of these cameras can be retrieved in case of any violations reported during the taxi trips to eliminate any complaints from service beneficiaries."

He added that the RTA always seeks to ensure the comfort and security of taxi riders in Dubai through using hi-tech devices and techniques to maximise their satisfaction, which ranks among its top priorities.

There's no clarification whether these cameras will also help taxi drivers and their defence in disputes with unruly passengers, but we're sure it's safe to assume this will be so.
