Hi there - we are moving out in July. Does anyone have any first hand experience of children doing A levels there?

[ i thought that Mr S M and Mrs H M G were the ones in charge of sixth form? Yes they are, and they help with the completion of UCAS apps, but they are not responsible for careers advice. They are helpful if aplying for their particular subject field, but if you have a child who simply isn't sure which subject they wish to pursue at degree level, there is no one with responsibility for general careers advice. My daughter was fluctuating between several different degree subjects. I spoke to the form teacher who admitted that there wasn't really anyone to help and to bring it up with head of Seniors. right i get ya, as I know that HMG was the one doing the ucas etc, you should bring it up with Mr R he is lovely and i am sure that he would look into it. did you suggest that on your parent questionnaire? i know that i sent them a few remarks as i always do.

My dd is currently in 6th form at bsak and have one who has already been through, now at uni in UK. In general I was v happy with the teachers and level of teaching. my only real criticisms - not enough careers/uni subject advice - there isn't a teacher responsible for this. Eldest was fine when doing ucas applications, but younger one really did need advice and there was no one there to give. also feel the range of a levels could be greater, particularly for arty kids. yes, there are plenty of after school activities - sports, cooking, drama, art. some are specifically linked to the a levels being studied. i thought that Mr S M and Mrs H M G were the ones in charge of sixth form?

There is also the British International School and in September Brighton College is opening. BSAK is an excellent school, but it is very much a state school. Cannot comment on BIS, but Brighton College comes from old 'public school' stock so should offer a differentapproach to learning. brighton college is new this year and will only go up to year 9. but remember they may have the same name from the schools in uk but they do not necesarily run the same, look at repton in dubai as an example.

very many thanks for that info. My children are surrounded by money at school here so they are well used to being the poorer ones!

I am very happy with BSAK ( and Im very fussy when it comes to the girls education). I do find the sport very lacking in regards to competition unless its rugby or cricket. The teachers are always available for any concerns and the kids are generally great , although there is a lot of wealth at the school so what my girls now see as 'the norm" is not quite the same as my ideas. they will hit the ground hard when they go home eventually in that respect. The teachers are reasonably strict but within what the kids can manage nd what I would expect.

i think yasmina will be doing sixth form next year too. bsak is the only other one. it is the oldest brit sch in ad, the sixth is pretty new but is doing extremely well.

thanks, yes British system. That is really good to hear as I just been on the phone to bsak and they say they think there will be a place for my daughter. Are there any negatives you have found?

It will all depend on the cirriculum you have back home... assuming you are already in the British system doing A levels. My children go to Al Khubairat and love the system ( currently both doing GCSE and A levels next year). This school is On the Island.. approx 1800 students over all years. Very good school.
