Anyone got an emergency travel document for a newborn?

My baby is two weeks old and we want to travel back to the UK in 4 weeks for a family christening / to introduce him to family and friends. British passports take up to 6 weeks, so we don't want to risk applying and it not being ready in time. I believe we can get an emergency travel document from the British Embassy to fly back (and get passport sorted in UK before returning again). Has anyone got any experience of this?
I have all the forms ready to fill out - but wondered if anyone could reassure me that we will definitely be eligible. And did you book flights first? Or apply first? And do the forms need to delivered by hand to the embassy with passport photos?
