Hate to spread bad vibes about a restaurant I have used a lot and really like but I had a takeaway last night from the one on the Pearl and there was a dead cockroach in my Tom Yum soup - didn't see it till it was actually on my spoon! I sent it all back and didn't pay and they called me to apologise and offered to send a new delivery - not a risk I was willing to take!

Another here who has eaten Mopane worms (only once, voluntarily though!), and half a cockroach (not voluntarily, the thought of finding the other half still makes me want to heave!)... BG

I've been to Noodle House on the Pearl once and I was so unimpressed by the food that I haven't been since. I know there's cockroaches everywhere here, there was even one cheeky one who danced across my living room floor last night - HORROR! (needless to say it was Death by Raid). However, if I saw one in my food at or from a restaurant, I would definitely be contacting the Health Department. As for Mopane worms - thank goodness in 30 years of living in S.Africa I was never conned into eating one of those - ick!!

Having started this whole thing off, I must now hang my hypocritical head in shame! Mentioned roach in soup thing to my son who says he clearly remembers me cheerfully eating deep fried mopane worms while living in South Africa and surely they don't differ much from cockroaches - quite sure I didn't do it 'cheerfully' but the kid has a point!

I don't want to burst anybodies bubble here...but do you really think because you don't see them in other places they aren't there? It's like when a rat appears "in public" in some supermarket, and the supermarket gets shut down for a while....you think the rats are gone or there aren't any in other places? Have you ever been out at night here in quiet places? How do you think some of the street cats survive? On a diet of roaches and rats. Just sayin'.:P

Haha. That's so funny - 'it is the restaurants responsibility to not feed people cockroaches'. It is a bit like the MOI facebook page that requests drivers not to hit pedestrians.

Deborah, I was not accusing you of anything ... settle down. I was merely marvelling at how a cockroach story - even a cockroach in a neighboring country - can have people swearing never to visit the restaurant again. ok, but frankly, refusing to eat at a resturant that someone has found a cockroach in thier food at, IS a sensible response. it is the restuarants responsibility to NOT feed people cockroaches, and to have a high level of hygene. if they cant do that, then they deserve to lose the business. if people DONT boycott places that fail in the delivery of the service and standards they promise, then where is the chance of these lapses being addressed?

Yes cockroaches are common in the Middle East and I have had one cockroach show up under the sink in my kitchen... but I never serve cockroaches up to my husband in his meal at dinner time. (Although maybe I should so he would stop expecting me to cook for him. :) )

Well I have cockroaches in my home kitchen from time to time but they don't make it into our meals . I think the food hygiene , restaurant cleaness and the standard of pubilc ( loos ) here in Doha is quite appalling especially in mall outlets .

I know it freaks people out but there are cockroaches most everywhere in the middle east.... In your home too. It's not the same as elsewhere like the UK for example where you would have to be the filthiest kitchen ever to have cockroaches. Here they are just a fact of life. Not to detract at all from what a horrid experience it must have been.... I once had one fall off the ceiling in an Indian restaurant into my curry...a big one! And yes it freaked me out but I didn't stop going there... It had probably just flown in from somewhere... They are crafty things! I just looks at it as a hopefully once in a lifetime experience and moved on otherwise you'll never eat out again. You should really complain about these things to the restaurants direct and get the municipality involved its wrong to ruin their reputation on a public forum about what could have been a one dff unfortunate incident and if you can see their kitchen is clean thats a bonus.

JackyD - reading Deborah's past posts, do you really think she came on EW to make up a story about finding a roach in her food? I for one am glad she warned us and I can assure you 100% that my comments are true too. Restaurants rest on their laurels too much here - bad service, mediocre food, etc, etc...and often we are paying lots of money to dine out. They should be pulled up and reported if their food or hygiene is not up to scratch - I'm sure you would have been horrified to find a roach in your food too! edited by chizz on 29/04/2012

JackyD - I can assure you that I am not a disgruntled ex-employee and I genuinely thought twice about putting up my initial comment, but I did really find a cockroach in my soup from Noodle House last night - a truly unpleasant experience that I would like other people to be able to avoid. For me this is not based on hearsay but on something that really happened. I certainly trust and value the words of other ExpatWoman forum users so I hope they can trust mine.

Just to add to the noodle house horror stories....my husband and my son both got food poisoning from eating a chicken dish in the City Centre one and I got food poisoning from eating a vegetable dish at the Landmark one!!! Only been to this establishment twice and both times it ended with food poisoning so I will NEVER be returning!

Wow, what a great way to torpedo a restaurant based solely on hearsay. I would rather listen to someone's warning based on their own experiences than to eat at a restaurant that would serve food that contains a cockroach. It's right up there in my mind with seeing restaurant workers use the toilet and leave the restroom without washing their hands before returning to the kitchen. I scratch those places off my list of places to eat too. Why take the chance? I agree ... but I'm just thinking that if you wanted to get back at an enemy or someone who fired you, starting a rumour like that would be a great way to do it. Having said that, I'm not going to Noodle House - in Dubai or Qatar - any time soon!

The problem is you can see into the kitchens at Noodle House and they look very clean, as do the dining areas of the restaurants! The Pearl branch has not been open so long (as far as I know) and I haven't seen any roaches at all around here...then again it only takes a couple of the things to breed and you have an infestation on your hands......It had def. put me off returning there though and yes, the OP should report them so that they can be ordered to fumigate and refresh their food hygiene qualifications! (if such things exist here??).. edited by chizz on 29/04/2012 Oh well if you can see in to the kitchen ... I guess I will just completely scratch this restaurant off my list of places to try. I'll stick to Chi Zen instead. (I love their Sweet and Sour chicken!) Wow, what a great way to torpedo a restaurant based solely on hearsay.

Well, I guess I know which restaurant I will NOT be trying. Or maybe I should ask to see the kitchen conditiions before I try it. ;)

How horrible for you. I live next door to that restaurant, but have stopped going as the service is so bad and they never seem to get my food right - you ask for the Black Pepper Beef a BIT less spicy and it comes to you devoid of any seasoning whatsoever... dry, old duck last time I went, manageress trying to snatch my still unfinished plate several times, handing me the dessert menu while I was still eating my main course and when you want the bill it's hard to get anyone's attention....have given them about 4/5 times to get it right, but have given up now and only use the Landmark branch, where they seem to do everything right! edited by chizz on 29/04/2012

Fortunately the delivery guy had gone off to get me some change so came back just as I found the cockroach! Wasn't sure if I should inform somebody official and didn't really know who or how. Oh at least you didnt have to pay, it's almost impossible to get a refund for anything in Dubai! Puts me off most takeaways when I hear things like this.
